In a suburb of Toronto...

"I'm trying to satisfy your need to probe into my private life and thoughts, but uh....I'm not going to give you any revelations. Just not going to happen." You should to try and guess who said this to a would-be interviewer inside a trailer parked in a Toronto suburb in 1986. If it takes you more than five or ten seconds to identify the person, then you probably need to see a certain film by Todd Haynes, and I don't mean Velvet Goldmine.

Frankly, I'm sick of actors, celebrities, whoever blowing off reporters like they're so fucking special. Not that I necessarily blame them, but... I just really couldn't give a shit.

If it's Dylan, he's neither an actor nor a celebrity, but a giant living amongst men.

If you don't want to be interviewed, don't agree to the interview. It's a very simple concept. He wasn't trapped in the trailer and forced to reveal things about himself against his will.

But if you agree to do an interview, answer the fucking questions. You chose this career, and you understand how the game works.

I caught a little of Todd Haynes on AMC's Shoot Out yesterday, very interesting, but they had too many segments.

I had no particular soft spot for Dylan, but the answer in the no. 1 spot on that Culture Vulture list is brilliant.

Have you ever watched "Don't Look Back"? Dylan not answering questions is a hell of a lot more entertaining than most anyone else answering questions.

He seems like a moron in all these clips. Obviously he is not, as his music demonstrates, but if this was my first exposure to the man it would probably be my last

THE GROUND RULES

Around the time of "Vincent and Theo," after much pleading and convincing by the publicist (a wonderful person named Renee Furst who is no longer with us) I agreed to interview Robert Altman. He was, to put it politely, a complete jerk. Insulting, demeaning, unhelpful, rude.

I stopped the interview and said, "Look, I'm doing this interview as a favor to your publicist, who gave me the impression that this was something you wanted to do. You don't want to do it, I'm cool. It's your call."

He then became civil and we finished the interview.

Life is too short to be anyone's doormat, especially someone who is talking to you because they hope to sell more product, especially if that person was once the director of "Whirlybirds."

And trust me, almost EVERYONE has a "Whirlybirds" somewhere on their resume.

I would tell that to Tommy Lee Jones -- he'd probably agree with it, and also mention that just because he agreed to an interview doesn't mean he loses his right to call people out when they're asking *stupid* questions. You see this same issue with athletes and the sports media every week.

Robert Altman directed "Whirlybirds"? Damn, you're right! IMDB says he directed 12 episodes.

I loved "Whirlybirds" when I was kid. And "Ripcord". Of course, I was about 6 during the heyday of "Whirlybirds" and about 8 for "Ripcord". They would probably be painful to watch now. At that age I didn't think there could be any better life than being an astronaut, flying helicopters, and skydiving.

Jay T: What if the question weren't stupid, just something a star would rather not answer?

Would you have the right to call a major star a major jerk if they behaved as if the rules of civility and/or intelligence didn't apply to them?

Aptitude, si, servitude, no.

And yes, I loved "Whirlybirds" too. Just used that example to keep the discussion at sea level.

Funny, but the greatest film director I ever interviewed, Krysztof Kieslowski, was also a gentleman and actually told me that interviews/press and awards were important because "the people who work on movies should have their work recognized."

No pretension, just genius and class. He is missed.

I agree, Carla, but I was referring more to what Jay T said in the first reply. Celebrities agree to these interviews and then act as though they're above it all and it's so demeaning to speak to the media.

If the interviewer is Merry Miller, however, all bets are off.
