Now that the biological host-vessel has expired, the spirit of Joey Bishop will attempt to enter (or perhaps already has entered) Jimmy Kimmel. Every culture and era needs a Joey Bishop type. Somebody smart, sardonic, flip, deadpan. This doesn't describe Kimmel to a T -- he's his own man, a guy who lives and dies by the wearing of elephant collars plus he smiles more than Bishop ever did -- but he's the closest thing we have today to a Bishopian figure.

What does that have to do with a mediocre like Kimmel? It's an insult to Bishop.

Oh yes, the wit of Jimmy Kimmel: drinking beer and watching cheerleaders on trampolines. I guess he does represent the Vegas tackiness of Bishop...

Kimmel is fat, ugly, and most importantly, not funny.
I'm mystified as to how he has his own show on television, not to mention how he managed to bag Sarah Silverman, who has more humor and talent in her clitoris than Kimmel has in his entire, over-sized body.
I'm surprised Wells is even writing about this lowest common denominator, barely above frat boy level "comedian".

This is going to sound incredibly lame, but I'd be far more likely to watch (or Tivo) Kimmel's show if they broadcast it in HD. Stewart and Colbert get a free pass on this, but a network show doesn't.
Also, I'm a really tough lay when it comes to laughs, but will admit, what I've seen of Kimmel's schtick ain't half bad. Unfortunately, that's more a commentary on how much comedy sucks today than it is a compliment to Kimmel.

Right Monument. I live in LA and see nothing of the two. Not on billboards, radio, TV or Kimmel's very own theater on Hollywood Blvd. Right under my cultural radar. And they're still not funny.

If a remake would do for their careers what it did for Martin and Rossi, I'm all for it.
That said, I'm still dying to see LOTSA. I love the theme song and the film looks quite pop art 60's stylish. Paramount thought Martin and Rossi would be the successor to Martin and Lewis. They THOUGHT.

The Man Show is off the air? Really?
An Emmy-winning Hollywood makeup artist is suing Snoop Dogg and several members of his posse, along with ABC, the "Jimmy Kimmel Live" show and the Walt Disney Company, for $25 million, alleging that Dogg and his buddies drugged and raped her in his dressing room after the rapper guest-hosted Kimmel's show. According to the woman, Kylie Bell, in January 2003, Dogg and his pals slipped her some laced champagne that left her feeling heavy and unable to control her own body, then had their way with her. She says she was reluctant to come forward right away for fear of retaliation, but eventually alerted police and the show's producers, who paid her medical bills and living expenses for a time.

Joey Bishop was a man of his time, sardonic, and original, all things considered.
Jimmy Kimmel is one of many in the younger generation trying too hard to be funny. Last Tuesday he was axed from ESPN/Disney's Monday Night Football for making humorless and unnecessary comments about a former employee.
Kimmel is a Vegas guy who tries to outdo the Rat Pack in terms of mean-spiritedness and vulgarity. There was more to it than that.
Theresa Brewer could really sing. I loved her version of "Duke's Place" that Larry King used to close his old radio program with.

I saw Joey Bishop once in Boys' Market (not a gay bar, a grocery store in Marina Del Rey). I just want you to know that I have been in the presence of a god.
(Actually, this was when I was about 10 and spent a month in LA, and I walked by Bishop, Hal Holbrook-- same grocery store, different day-- and Groucho, outside the Cafe Swiss; and we saw Walter Matthau while driving, and Fred Gwynne somewhere. Every time I've been to LA since then, the level of celebrity I've seen in public is like an ex-cast member of The Young and the Restless or something. Not sure why.)

Scooterzz: Angry? Well, put it like this -- in the early '80s, he was down to doing dinner theater revivals of '5o's Broadway comedies. He appeared in a Texas city -- no, not Houston -- opposite a well-known actress who later told me that it was the most unpleasant experience of her professional career, that he was a nasty lout who would whipser nasty things under his breath to her -- while they were on stage! during performances! -- that would throw her off her lines. I hope he's at peace now.
