Suimilar Naomi Watts posters
Ad art for Scott Coffey's Ellie Parker ('05) and Michael Haneke's Funny Games (due in February '08).

No biggie, but interesting that the Warner Independent ad art guys chose the same
Naomi Watts eye to be running the tears and mascara.

Nobody saw Ellie Parker, so hell, they could have used the exact same photo and saved some time.

I tried to watch Ellie Parker on Sundance and got through about 5 minutes. It was awful.

Wells to thezipper: You're not only being cruel but you're dead wrong -- "Ellie Parker" is a sharp and sometimes hilarious little character study about the ups and downs of a struggling actress. It's not an embarassment at all, it feels real, it's well acted...what's your problem? Just because it didn't do any business doesn't mean it smells, or smelled. (Smelt?) It's fine.

Ellie Parker is worth watching if only for Watts' rather fearless comic performance, especially the scene where she's auditioning for the Euro-Trash. I love Naomi Watts. I love looking at her face. She's almost homely looking. Almost. Which is what makes her so interesting to me. Same thing with Sissy Spacek circa '75. And Samantha Morton in Jesus' Son. All of these women are possessed with perfect Christian faces. I am a Jew and nothing makes me happier than looking at a severely symmetrical gentile punim, with a tiny little nose and pouty red lips, all framed by a shaggy tuft of cornsilk hair. These women look like the American dream, even if most of them aren't from America. They're like the ultimate Bar Mitzvah gifts, what a good boy gets for memorizing his Torah portion cold.

thezipper to Wells: it lost me in the first few minutes. I usually think Naomi's effort is invisible in most of her work, but in Ellie Parker I could just feel the gears grinding. I don't think it was an embarrassment, just a bad miss for me.

This poster actually reminds me more of one of the posters for the dreaded captivity. Same open mouth, same tear-streaked face. http://www.joblo.com/newsimages1/captivity-poster2.jpg

MilkMan, I agree with you that Naomi Watts beauty is atypical, although I don't know that I would ascribe the word 'homely' to her. She was beautiful in Mulholland Drive, and photographed well as a non-blond in "The Painted Veil."
Watts is malleable, and has played a wide range of roles. For whatever reason, she does not get much praise from the general public.
Although I am not Jewish, she sure would make a good Bar Mitzvah gift. Well, she would beat the hell out of receiving the game, "Boggle."

This is a haunting poster and Watts is stunning. Her performance in Ellie Parker was just as brilliant as hers in Mulholland Drive, 21 Grams, King Kong, The Painted Veil, Eastern Promises....etc. She is versatile and show a lot of ranges in most of her work since Mulholland Drive. Sean Penn calls her the best and he is right. High expectations for this one. To whoever who got through only 5 mins of Ellie Parker or half-way of The Paint Veil, what a shame, it was their losses.
