"War" in December

The first Academy screenings for Charlie Wilson's War (Universal, 12.25) have been scheduled for Monday, 12.3 -- one in New York, one in Los Angeles. This plus director Mike Nichols' tendency to finesse his films until the very last minute (like a lot of directors) plus his statement at last night's American Cinematheque tribute to Julia Roberts that he's still tooling around with it indicates no media screenings until after Thanksgiving.

Aaron Sorkin's War script loses its energy a little bit in the final third. It's best in the first and second acts. The ending is okay -- thoughtful, echo-y, a "hmmm" quality -- but it's not gangbusters. Endings aren't everything, but they matter.

I know this one is expected to be one of the main contenders but I just don't see it. The script was well-written but it was boring. There was nothing that hooked me, not even Hoffman's character. I don't know how many people will really wanna see a movie like this, even with Hanks and Roberts. And despite those names and Nichols and Sorkin, I don't think there's any way it cracks $100 mil, or maybe even $75 mil. Most of the actors were miscast. The trailer was a mess. I'm just not excited about it, and if I had to make one bold Oscar prediction to stake my name on, it would be that the Academy, and audiences, will largely give this one the cold shoulder. It's been a really good year for movies. I just have a feeling that CWW won't have what it takes to stand out in such a deep year. I've still got to see this, Atonement, American Gangster and There Will Be Blood but other than those, I've seen pretty much everything and there's a lot of strong competition out there. CWW's X-Mas release may help it but then again, the studio isn't leaving it much time to gain traction. Anyone who's reading this in NY or LA, GO SEE CONTROL!!

I strongly disagree with you about the script. I think the the last third is the most powerful part of the story - before that it is just witty and charming. The last third drives home the point. Sorkin's style and delivery. The story packs a punch. Much of what will go on in that last part will take place on the faces of Tom Hanks, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Julia Roberts. I hope it doe well.

MiraJeff, aren't you embarrassed, at your age, with your lack of experience to go on and on like you do? Don't you feel any shame at all about saying stupid things like "Most of the actors were miscast. The trailer was a mess. I'm just not excited about it, and if I had to make one bold Oscar prediction to stake my name on, it would be that the Academy, and audiences, will largely give this one the cold shoulder."

We'll see if your bold prediction is right. All I know is what I've seen and whether it's good or not -- and much of the raving that goes on on this blog and in between its sticky sheets will never get anywhere near the Kodak.

Zimmergirl, I'm not embarrassed at all. Experience is overrated. It's all the old Guru folks who should be embarrassed. I feel no shame at all. And who the hell are you anyways? The script has been overpraised and the trailer was crap, considering it's a movie starring Hanks and Roberts. Can you actually say that if you hadn't read the script, if you were just JoBlo moviegoer, that you'd wanna see the movie based on that trailer. Hanks as a Texan senator? Julia's southern accent? Julia as a blonde? Sorkin appeals to such a limited audience. We WILL see, Zimmergirl. So what have YOU seen that's stood out, in your mind? I thought Sam Riley in Control was amazing. Wanna put your money where your mouth is?

Endings are EVERYTHING!

They will make or break a movie.

That trailer kills in front of a live audience. Saw it in front of a bunch of older folks on Friday night with MICHAEL CLAYTON and a more mixed crowd sunday morning for WE OWN THE NIGHT and it knocked them over both times. Laughter in all the right places, and they loved Hanks. The film is going to do fine.
