I can't remember the last time I saw a fiery volcano explode in a film, but we know we won't be seeing one from Roman Polanski any time soon with the plug recently pulled on his Pompeii movie. But look at this -- a real-life volcano blowing fire and fury just hours ago about 130 kilometers off the coast of Yemen. I can only hope for a YouTube video down the road. It looks like the fire-breathing monster effect in the trailer for J.J. Abrams' Cloverfield.

The story was filed this morning by the Toronto Star.

Abrams confirmed it's not the title.

For some reason, synchronicity or whatever, I've been noticing a lot of documentaries on cable lately about past and future "super volcanoes." They talk about Vesuvius and Krakatoa and the devastating effects such a volcano would have if it hit a heavily-populated area today, plus the long-term climatic effects.
The Yemen volcano, thankfully, does not appear to qualify as such a volcano (though it's bad enough for the people who live(d) there). But I had a few tense moments this morning when I first heard about this.

If you believe the numerous Televangelists this is just another sign that Jesus' return is imminent. According to them, it's all there in "The Book of Revelations."
