A relaxed, amusing and wide-open Charlie Rose sit-down with Joel and Ethan Coen, Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin.
I was talking with Bardem, Miramax chief Daniel Battsek and some others associated with the film at the No Country party during the Toronto Film Festival, and Bardem said at one point, "We are all very lucky." And I was immediately struck by his perfect delivery of this line. Not in a champagne-toasting, smiling, cheers-around-the-room sort of way, but with an air of relaxation and matter-of-fact acknowledgement. He wasn't saying that good fortune was rote -- he was smiling and he meant it -- but he wasn't making a huge deal out of it either.
Make a really good film that everyone loves and, of course, you're very lucky, but we're all luckier than we care to acknowledge. Right?

I agree. We all ARE luckier than we usually admit. I'll be giving thanks for that tomorrow.
And, whatever, I'll be giving thanks for YOU too, Jeff, and this site.

Yes. All of us should give thanks for our great life.
However, what a pity that the Cohen brothers did not know how to write the end of "No Country for Old Men." Therefore, they had to rely on a "deus ex machina" ending.
"DEUS EX MACHINA"
1. (in ancient Greek and Roman drama) a god introduced into a play to resolve the entanglements of the plot.
2. any artificial or improbable device resolving the difficulties of a plot.

While I enjoyed the Rose roundtable, I thought it was a little embarrassing that he hardly directed any questions to Bardem.

I'm adding my thanks for this site, the work you put into it, Mr. Wells, and the many entertaining posters. And I'm thankful for the films of Steven Spielberg.

Ernie - that's because the unvarnished truth about Rose is that he is, contrary to conventional wisdom, in fact a terrible interviewer. I stopped watching his show after his over-eager puppy-like enthusiasm interrupted yet another guest as they were trying to relate something interesting.
At least when it comes to artists. Maybe he remembers the number one interview rule when he talks to "serious" guests: know when to shut the fuck up.

What many of us take for granted is that by being born in this era, in the US, we've essentially won the lottery of time. While many suffer here, those of us with the luxury of wasting hours on trivial pursuits such as H-e, not saddled with debilitating handicaps or diseases are even luckier. I thank god everyday for the blessings bestowed upon me. While I've experienced great loss and pain and my life is not perfect--who's is?--it is nothing compared to the suffering experienced by billions on a daily basis. No matter how frustrated I may get at times professionally or personally, I try never to take this for granted. If I died tomorrow at the age of 28 I would have nothing to complain about, having lived a charmed life compared to 99% of people today and throughout history.
I am one of the lucky ones, and I am extremely thankful.

OK, I'll take Abraham's bait.
Whether one likes the ending of NCFOM or not, it most certainly does not utilize deus ex machina. Suggesting so suggests a misunderstanding of deus ex machina or a misunderstanding of the movie.

I, too, am very lucky and very thankful. So, hats off to Jeff and the posters here as it never fails to entertain. (Jumping tracks) Charlie Rose has the greatest guests in the world and he flaps his gums like a meth-addicted auctioneer with his constant interruptions and pointless asides. What a damn waste. Yet, in spite of that I will watch the "No Country" roundtable because where else can you find something like that?

I'm thankful, after a few years of reading this board, to have finally registered and chosen a screen name.
Soon I'll take over the Comments section, sending the BurmaShaves and JeffMCMs of the world to much deserved oblivion.
Just kidding! I've loved their posts, and those of everyone else, but especially Wells' posts, and especially when he goes after the folks in the Comments section. (Go easy on me, Wells. I'm a newbie 'round these parts.)
