Peter Yates' The Friends of Eddie Coyle ('73), still unavailable on DVD, is playing tonight and tomorrow at the Brattle theatre in Cambridge as part of a "Boston Filmed" series. I've heard about that bootleg version that's been mastered from an old VHS tape, but who in their right mind would want to watch such a thing?

Well, if your choice is between watching or not watching...you'll survive the VHS. Many of us did.

I actually saw COYLE at the Westbury Drive-in (http://cinematreasures.org/theater/8505/) when I was a youngster. I don't remember much of it. (I was in my pajamas and my parents were assuming that I would fall asleep). I also saw THE GODFATHER, TOWERING INFERNO and THE DEEP at this drive-in.

The sad truth is that if and when this film is ever released to DVD, it will be treated like most other older, somewhat obscure/cultish films from the 70s...as a barebones single DVD with no extras.

Paramount has completely dropped the ball on their theatrical DVD division while the TV section is in overdrive. I still have my VHS tucked away in the vault. Maybe the best bet is Criterion since Paramount has no problem letting them put out Ace in the Hole and Robinson Cursoe on Mars

It is legally available over the net though Amazon's "unbox" on-demand program...if you don't mind having their intrusive file-sharing programming on your computer. No word on how the transfer looks.

Corey 3rd is pretty close on the money with the studio's plans for the film.

I thought that trailer was kind of awful actually. I've generally been surpised at the trailers from the 1970s on the DVDs I've rented (THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123 being an exception). THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR has one of the worst trailers I've ever seen. How did they get anyone to go to the movies back then?
