This poster certainly does capture Tamara Jenkins' The Savages. Not much indication of any pulse-quickening plot elements, a fall-winter vibe, middle-aged brother and sister (Laura Linney, Philip Seymour Hoffman) in repose, white-haired dad (Philip Bosco) sitting on the park bench in diapers. It's a mildly affecting, smartly written, somewhat doleful drama...but don't let that stop you. Fox Searchlight will release it limited on 11.28.07.

Now THAT'S a good poster.
He may have drawn Hoffman a little thin, though.

I liked the one with the Bathroom/Handicapped icons better. It was sharper. I hear nothing but good things about this movie except from you Wells.

Wells to Burma Shave: It was obvious from the get get-go that "The Savages" was a mature, observant piece about facing middle-aged responsibilities and seeking a semblance of happpiness in the bargain. Obviously a well-acted drama teeming with talent. It understood immediately why it was getting such good word-of-mouith at Sundance, and I was fighting an urge to leave after 30 and 40 minutes. Hoffman and Linney are great as usual, but I don't want to know from senile old dads in diapers, and I don't need any reminders about how drab and dreary life can be for people in their 40s. It's the best film I've wanted to walk out of in a long time.

Good point, Georgie P. It could be Tomine. But something about the way the title is lettered reminds me of Clowes. I could be wrong. Still, read Ice Haven.
And this movie looks fucking silly to me. Literally. Like it revels in silliness, i.e., people eating cookies when they're not supposed to. Why is that funny? How about a movie dealing with senile parents in which the kids refuse to change the parents diapers and the entire house smells like shit and everytime someone walks into the house they gag and almost vomit. Now that's comedy. This movie looks like it shares a funny bone with Little Miss National Lampoon's Sunshine Vacation. Wacky. Quirky. Some people would call this movie a black comedy but it's about as black as a Swedish asshole. Rent Little Murders or something and stop encouraging Phil Hoffman's career.

But you demand that apathetic Americans face the realities of the Iraq war? I dunno...

MilkMan, you don't know what you're talking about.
Wells, you're allowed to evince the same sentiment about this well-made, occasionally challenging movie that you eviscerate others for feeling about Iraq War dramas -- but shouldn't you at least acknowledge it?

100% Tomine? Hard to tell w/o a close-up but that looks more like Chris Ware to me.

Milkman, please write the screenplay for: Beavis and Butt take care of their senile parents.
Wells is tremendously squeemish, and I'd like to hear PSH get testy with him in an interview. Linney would never, she's too polite.

Holy shit, that's Chris Ware? I had no idea. And this is coming from a douchebag who carries his snacks in a Rusty Brown lunchbox. I stand corrected and humbled.

As much as I love the actors, the tone, style, and mood coming from the trailer feels played and oh-so indie. I can't count how many times an indie trailer made me feel the exact same way. But I could be surprised.
OT: I was just surprised by Gone Baby Gone. I'm criminally derelict in getting to it and expected it to be good, but not that good. Ben Affleck's a director, and between this and Jesse James I am firmly in the Casey Affleck fan club.
The narrative lost its way for a while in the middle, but why it had to made perfect sense at the end. Bravo Ben Affleck!

Extremely inspired choice! I love it, as a huge Chris Ware fan, I could immediately tell just from the lettering and wintry atmosphere.
If any of you want to read a truly sensational graphic novel other than "Watchmen," please check out "Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth." He's like the Pynchon of the graphic novel world.

Burma to Wells:
Fair enough, man. I've certainly had these moments of being fed up with domestic horrors. I was never more mystified than by the total rapture of most critics regarding ABOUT SCHMIDT, a film I considered to be a fairly failed and aimless comedy, albeit with a strong central performance and a touching ending. I don't really want to know from senile diapers either, let's say I get enough of that in real life. Philip Bosco is one of my favorite actors. I totally get where you're coming from.
