Sunday numbers

My source says Beowulf went up 5% from Friday to Saturday, and is now expected to take in $27,286,000 as of late tonight. Fantasy Moguls' Steve Mason is reporting that Robert Zemeckis' motion capture fantasy went up 20% from Friday and will tally just over $30 million. Deadline Hollywood Daily's Nikki Finke is reporting that Beowulf gained only 6% Saturday and will end up with $28.1 million. Add it all up and the verdict is that Bewoulf showed vigor and performed fairly well.

Add it all up and this looks cut and pasted from yesterday.

Are you pulling a David Chase, cutting off in mid-sentence like that?

Whoops, that was corrected by the time my comment actually posted. To clarify, it originally cut off at "the verdict is that Beowulf..."

More importantly, though, the Da Vinci Code 0 is on the back-burner, which means less boredom at the box office. http://www.darkhorizons.com/news07/071118h.php

I finally managed to catch it this morning. I saw it in IMAX and my suspicion is that the format saved it. It is light years ahead of Polar Express, but still looked too much like a video game cut scene at times (especially the characters in the background).

And it's pretty damn silly. Jeffrey pointed out that Shoot 'em Up appeared to be an affectionate parody of that genre. I wonder whether that isn't what Gaiman and Avery intended here. After all the discussion on these boards about what a "serious" film it is, I was thrown at first by how goofy it is. You never care a whit for any of the characters (except maybe Grendel).

Don't get me wrong: it is a hell of a lot of fun and I would recommend it to anyone, at least in 3D. But it is my suspicion that once the glow of the IMAX 3D wears off, Jeffrey is going to turn on this movie bigtime.

I saw it on IMAX as well and I have to admit it was amazing to look at. Even though I thought the rest was boring (I remember being better when I read back when I was in school)

People who saw it on the regular screen got screwed.

Kudos to Paramount. This will be the only hit they have all year!

I'm enjoying the fact that Paramount gave themselves the smallest drop in the top 10 with Sunday's estimates for BEOWULF. For a picture that got only a 4-6% uptick from Friday to Saturday (20% if you don't count the late Thursday showings as part of Friday's revenue), that's some wishful thinking indeed. Only the bean counters behind BELLA were more blindly optimistic.

BEOWULF maybe the only hit Paramount will have all winter.

I really hope that Swenney Todd does well but I don't think younger audience will come out and support a musical. Even if it has Johnny Depp and other great supporting cast members. Do you think younger audiences know who Sondheim is?

Not to mention that the Paramount Pictures publicity + marketing team knows how to support a movie. They are the worst. To tell you the truth I'm quite shocked that BEOWULF did as well as it did considering it's a 100 times better to see it on the Imax screen.

Parmount Pictures better enjoy the success you will have with BEOWULF. Come Wednesday with the holiday movies it will be lucky if it's at #3.

That was pretty much Ebert's take on the film:

gr81: "I really hope that Swenney Todd does well but I don't think younger audience's will come out and support a musical.Even if it has Johnny Depp and other great supporting cast members."

They seemed to be ok with Chicago. (Assuming those were younger audiences...) The real concern to me is whether they'll support a film where Depp has grey hair.

"Do you think younger audiences even know who Sondheim is?"

I don't think that's even relevant to them being interested in it.

"Not to mention that the Paramount Pictures publicity + marketing team knows how to support a movie. They are the worst. To tell you the truth I'm quite shocked that BEOWULF did as well as it did considering it's a 100 times better to see it on the Imax screen."

Their marketing of Beowulf was a helluva lot better than WB's marketing of Polar Express.

D.Z. I agree with you.

If Paramount was smart they would start screening it for young audiences you know the college crowd. Get the word out there that this is going to be a good movie that people should see.

I see this year after year from Paramount where they have a good product and screw it up. Examples Dreamgirls, Flags Of Our Father, Letters from Iwo Jima.

Polar Express made the money back and more. The arrogant attidtude of Paramount that this is huge hit and will continue is so not going to happen with the big holiday movies coming out.
