American Gangster will probably beat Bee Movie this weekend by at least $5 million, if not more. The Ridley-Denzel-Russell crime drama is tracking at 90,57 and 40 (mostly over-25 males) and should easily tally $40 million.
Jerry Seinfeld's Bee Movie is at 84, 40 (very strong "definite interest" for animated film) and 18, which means it'll definitely crest $30 million and could reach the mid 30s.
New Line has been doing an excellent job of hiding The Martian Child, which is at 48, 27 and 5...a disaster. Fred Claus, opening 11.9, is at 67, 39 and 5 -- likely to move up over the next few days. Lions for Lambs is at 59, 20 and 3...flatine. Beowulf (11.16) is at 69, 33 and 5....looking good but not great.

I'm all for seeing quality family films succeed. But I think I'll feel all warm inside if American Gangster beats the snot out of Bee Movie.

Parents should save the money they might waste on BEE MOVIE and/or FRED CLAUS and spend it on ENCHANTED on Nov. 21 instead. Give your kids a taste of quality, for a change.

Nah, I'll be surprised if Bee Movie doesn't win #1. The math just doesn't make sense. Bee Movie is playing at almost a thousand theaters more than AG, and it's an hour shorter. Plus you say AG is at 40% first choice for over 25 males - I thought only under 25 males were a guarantee to line up opening weekend?

All of the projections I have read have BEE MOVIE about $10M ahead of AMERICAN GANGSTER. And tracking has proven to be not the most accurate tool in predicting box office. Wishful thinking on Jeff's part perhaps? Who can blame him, of course. There is not a single item I've read that doesn't have its knives out for this crap-looking cartoon.

Re thatmovieguy's comment on ENCHANTED:
The trailer is awful. It's hard for me to embrace the notion that the film isn't much more than broad lowest-common-denominator sitcom with Amy Adams now opting for nothing more than payday roles.

Correction to the above post: "isn't much more" should read "is much more."

The frequently-cited Peter Howell of the Toronto Star gave American Gangster 1.5/4 stars.
Bee Movie got 2.5.
Bee Movie struck me as a 2.5-star movie all the way. Too much talent to be horrible, too much ego to be as good as it should.
