The Cloverfield 2 trailer (i.e., the one that preemed iin theatres last weekend in front of Beowulf) is up. Great stuff. No monster glimpses -- just the old throaty Godzilla roar, lots of herky-jerky photography, lots of running around Manhattan. Helicopters, subway tunnels, walls collapsing..."what's that?" Underneath the monster-movie trappings, producer J.J. Abrams isn't trying to hide the fact that it's basically a 9.11 revisiting. "Whatever it is, it's winning."

It's true about the 9/11 undertones. That must have been a part of the concept/discussion. We all saw that amazing footage that day captured by individuals....so try and take a little of that and blend it with Godzilla.

I think the other day someone called this The Godzilla Witch Project. Pretty apt, although it certainly looks like a working example of the less-is-more principle. I just hope it ends with the entire city being nuked, protagonists included.

I think the most subtle 9/11 parallel I spotted was when they're in the convenience store, looking out through the glass but seeing nothing as there's dust/debris obscuring the windows. I knew quite a few folks who ducked into stores and shops as the towers came down who described it just like that (plus, we've seen footage of that before-- the French guys' documentary, I believe).

The movie is about 9.11? That's a bit of a stretch. Is any disaster movie that takes place in Manhattan from now on about 9.11? Is Spielberg's War of the Worlds about 9.11? Is the Towering Inferno about 9.11? Don't impose your connotations on other people.

Yes, Spielberg's War of the Worlds was about 9/11, just as the original one was about the Cold War. Don't impose your blinders on other people.

Spielberg specifically said that his version of War of the Worlds was largely inspired by his being separated from his family on 9/11 and unable to get to them. And there's deliberate 9/11 imagery woven through the entire thing.

Oh, man, this looks good... the action scenes remind me of Children of Men in that raw, highly realistic way.
A lot of people are going to throw up in the theater, though, by the looks of it. Not that I care personally. ;)

I suspect that anyone that lived through Pearl Harbor, anytime they see a movie about planes bombing ships think, "Oh shit, another movie about Pearl Harbor." And I don't say that in jest, 9/11 is part of our consciousness now, so anytime someone blows up something in New York, sure, it'll remind us of 9/11. Doesn't mean it is inspired by it, sometimes its just fun to blow up New York. Not for real mind you. No, seriously Homeland Security!! I said that in jest, a joke!?? You remember humor?
Anyway, I for one hope this thing is as good as the trailers. I hope the whole movie is told from regular people and we don't have one single Michael Bay cut-away to the Secretary of the Defense, or the Pentagon, or any of that other crap he likes to do for no good reason.

Not to mention Vietnam imagery and Holocaust imagery (has there ever been a better visual metaphor for that event than the train full of people being burned alive, racing through a station?)

If this REALLY IS a shine on "Godzilla" then a metaphorical 9/11 paralell is entirely called for: The original "Gojira," especially in it's Japanese uncut version (which is now out on a gorgeous ultra-affordable US DVD so no serious film fan has any excuse left not to see it) is 100% 'really about' Hiroshima and it's aftermath.
There had been "giant monster rampage" movies before "Gojira" came out in 1954, but NONE of them ever looked or felt like it did and they never looked the same after. Japan taught world cinema what seeing a cityscape obliterated by a destructive force of unimaginable scale had to look like because they'd lived through it - vaporized buildings, fleeing citizens, shaking streets, miles of radiation-burned survivors and all.
The point is, once you actually experience a sensation or event, it tends to change the way your able to re-create something similar artistically. On 9/11 New Yorkers felt the ground tremble under them, buildings shudder around them, fled from dust-clouds and watched as something punched a hole in the skyline. No movie where these things happen, even if it's by force of a giant CGI dinosaur, will ever NOT look or feel quite a bit like it and still feel even a little bit honest.

Sure, you can still destroy New York without it being a 9/11 reference. But a handheld video camera movie about people running through the streets of New York while untold horrors happen? I don't think that's a stretch.

It looks fun, but the only thing that worries me is the fact that during some of these scenes, I think people would more likely be running for their lives, rather than filming something. A journalist, yes. A regular guy, no. That was the one thing that bugged me about the end of Blair Witch, which I otherwise loved. There was no reason for her to be running her camera during that scene.

I think the fact that we are back to making movies about a destroyed New York (Cloverfield, I am Legend) shows that we didn't let the terrorists win.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to clear my credit cards for Black Friday. Take that Osama! USA! USA! USA!

You can see a brief glimpse of the monster in the trailer. No detail, but you see something VERY big moving between buildings. Also, if you look at the creepy scene with the three people's shadows, the lady in the center begins to swell up like a balloon.
Also, you can hear the monster in the final scene of the trailer. It sounds kinda like a dolphin.
I like that the whole movie isn't being shot on a low quality DV, it appears that the character who is taping everything gets himself a decent camera eventually.

That part of Blair Witch didn't bother me - I think the characters are all so fucked-up and scared at that point that peering through the camera is probably either completely compulsive, or else it makes them feel a tiny bit removed from what's happening in front of them, illogical as that may be.
