The file name is evilview.jpg which for some reason led me to think it's Orson Welles in Touch of Evil, which I know isn't right, since TOE was Black and White.
That being said, I'm going to guess Robert Mitchum or Gary Cooper.
I don't know who the man in the foreground is, but I'm pretty sure the guy way down in the valley, riding out front and wearing a white hat, is Lord Baltimore.
Though it's not him, it's very reminiscent of Harrison Ford's scene in the first Indy where he's looking out over the hills while the workers are excavating the Well of Souls. I wouldn't be surprised if this scene is where Spielberg got the idea.
"Though it's not him, it's very reminiscent of Harrison Ford's scene in the first Indy where he's looking out over the hills while the workers are excavating the Well of Souls. I wouldn't be surprised if this scene is where Spielberg got the idea."
Watched this again the other day. Wells needs to watch this next time he is on his 'Spielberg is a hack' routine. A hack couldn't sniff that movie.
Wells to readers: Gary Cooper in Henry Hathaway's "Garden of Evil," a talky, second-tier western with a tedious Susan Hayward performance. Best scene: the Mexican guy gets hit in the chest and back with arrow after arrow after arrow...and keeps screaming at his Indian attackers all through it, as if their arrows are some kind of PERSONAL affront.
I've never seen Garden of Evil (1954), but Kurosawa's Throne of Blood (1957) features a scene almost identical to what you describe. Toshiro Mifune's Macbeth character staggers along an elevated platform against the inside of a fortress wall as he gets hit by dozens of arrows shot by his own men as they turn against him. And man, does he ever rage against them before he goes down.
Magnificent. All in a single shot. Kurosawa said he outfitted Mifune with an inner layer of real armor, covered with padding to hold the arrows as they hit, in turn covered with fake armor. Then he had a couple dozen skilled archer shoot real arrows into Mifune.
Even if Mifune had total faith in the director, special effects guys, and the archers, it took incredible guts to act that scene.
Kurosawa was a well-known fan of American westerns. I wonder whether he had this scene from Garden of Evil in mind when he designed this climax to Throne of Blood.

It could be Jimmy Stewart,Cooper is a good choice and Henry Fonda... But the Duke? That ain't the Duke. Duke never stood that tall and narrow.
But I'm sticking with Jimmy Stewart from one of his Anthony Mann Westerns. But I won't be surprised if it's Cooper.

My first thought was Gary Cooper and I'm sticking to that. It's not The Duke and not quite lanky enough for Jimmy Stewart.

Dang... it is Snipes! Mick Travis... That was funny.
Vansmith... I wasn't knockin the Duke... But trust me the Duke never stood that erect and his gut pulled in.
When is Wells going to let us know how it is... Seeing how we all know it's not Bogart, Cagney or Joan Crawford.

That said wouldn't it be a kicker if we are all wrong and it's actually Joel McCrea form Ride the High Country!
