The trailer for Fool's Gold (Warner Bros., 2.8.08), which showed before last night's Juno screening at the Leows/AMC plex near Harvard Square, promises a coarse, idiot-level romcom in the vein of Jewel of the Nile and Romancing the Stone.

You can tell right away from Hudson's food-throwing-on-the-yacht bit that director Andy Tennant hasn't lost his knack for over-emphasis. I can only presume that people like myself are going to hate most if not all of this. That seems to be the general idea, at least. Matthew McConaughey, the reigning king of the empties, costars with Kate Hudson, who has made nothing of any consequence since Almost Famous.

At least it is being dumped into the right month, the dead zone that starts right after the Oscars...I can't stomach either of them.

I think Romancing the Stone deserves more credit than being tagged 'idiot-level'.

the only thing that could save this from becoming 2008's version of 'the big bounce' would be the presence of ray winstone.

The last movie to costar Ray Winstone and Donald Sutherland was COLD MOUNTAIN. How the mighty have fallen.

I was about to say. Who looked more embarrassed to be in this movie? Winstone or Sutherland? And Sutherland's made his share of bad movies for the paycheck.

To be fair, it didn't look as bad as I imagined (I loathe Kate Hudson, my least favorite actress by far). It looks like a jokier version of Sahara, if that's possible. It sort of screams "dvd" though...

True, but I bet this is the first movie to costar Spud and Theo Huxtable.

First off, I'm going to have to slap Jeff for comparing this stunning piece of shit to "Romancing the Stone." That's just stupid. Maybe "RTS" isn't exactly "The African Queen", but it's a very entertaing piece of 80's Hollywood. I'd be thrilled if Zemekis would re-embrace the enthusiastic style of adventure/comedy that he had then. As it is he seems inthralled with stiff eyed CGI people.
Second, if I thought McConaughey and Hudson could be in anything more worthless and reduce my already sewer level opinion of them both, I was wrong. This really does look like something to commit suicide to. These two are more than ready to be sent off to sitcom land. That being said I'm sure it will make $95 million stateside, spawn a sequel and another reunion of these two hacks 5 years from now when they're once again desperate.

I can't bring myself to watch the trailer quite yet (but know I'll see it played in Pacific Theatres lobbies), but maybe Kate's trying to do a homage to her mother's performance in Garry Marshall's OVERBOARD.

Does anyone her think that Kate just throwed her career in the garbage after a good start in Almost Famous? As soon as she hit the late 30 she will be without work. I actually thought that she would have a better career.

As great as Hudson was in Almost Famous, it's fascinating to look at how Sarah Polley turned it down for precisely this reason.
Now Hudson is starring in third-rate romantic comedies while Polley is directing indie movies with Oscar nominations (I'm betting)....
and kudos to defenders of Romancing the Stone. Aside from "The Going Get Tough" the Jewel of the Nile doesn't have much going for it but that first film is a great piece of mid-80s fun. No one involved owes an apology for it.

Matthew will always get a pass from me thanks to his performance in Dazed and Confused.
Looking at Kate's IMDB page, yes I would agree that she has wasted everything after Almost Famous.
