IMAX "Dark Knight"

This bad-angle camcorder video, taken before an IMAX showing of I Am Legend and posted last night, shows most of the bank-job sequence that begins Chris Nolan's The Dark Knight. It was clearly shot with impressions of the legendary bank-heist sequence from Michael Mann's Heat in mind.

I love the silhouette of the moving head of the guy in front of the camera operator in the very beginning, and the laughter than follows the "bus driver?...what bus driver?" ine. And I love how Willliam Fichtner's reading of the line "do you have any idea who you're stealing from?" (which refers to the fact that the bank has lots of mafia money in its vaults) is very similar to Warren Beatty's yelling during the "bark like a dog" sequence in Bugsy.

I seem to recall seeing a Batman / Joker movie before... maybe it's just my imagination?

After that leaked trailer, I was kind of on board with this thing. And then they completely lost me with that "he wears make-up to be scary" line. That whole wear-theatrical-costumes-to-inspire-fear trope of BEGINS was the most eye-rolling part of the whole enterprise. And now they're freakin' reprising it?! Why? Why does something as heightened as Batman and/or the Joker need to be explained? Why can't they just BE?

It just underlines how stupid it all is. Give Burton props. He created a universe where a man could dress like a bat and it made sense. It never required exposition. You never questioned it.

The bank heist in Heat was one of my favorite scenes of all time - until about the 25th viewing, when I realized Pacino and the cops get the tip, leave the station, and arrive at the bank. In about 30 seconds.

'Heat' was one of my favorite movies of all-time until I realized Michael Mann can't write dialogue and every scene is filled with laughable, ludicrous exchanges...

Josh, the travel time to the heist in Heat is slightly suspect, but you can definitely interpret it as being closer to ten minutes than 30 seconds. I don't remember the exact sequencing, but who's to say the tip didn't come in earlier - I don't think you have to look at the intercutting scenes as though they are both in real time. As far as action movie directors go, I think Mann pays FAR more attention to the laws of time and space than most others.

And delbomber, I agree that some of Mann's dialogue can be laughably bad (example: much of Miami Vice), but for some reason Heat gets a pass from me in that department. The character work and overall quality of that movie even makes line like "you're going down" sound fine to my ears.

Really, I'm kinda surprised at the negativity here. We're talking about the Heat bank heist scene, which I have to hope all would agree is one of the best (if not the best) shoouts in the history of cinema. I think it's incredibly cool that we have a talented director paying homage to it in a Batman movie!

If you are going to go to all the trouble of shooting a pirated copy of the trailer and then post it for all the world to see... can't you do a half-way decent job of it? Sheesh, who are these people?

Mann's dialogue works no matter what the characters are saying because its all in how they say it. like "she's got a great ass, and you got your face all up in it!!". even miami vice works but i dont think colin farrell was the ideal actor for sonny..paul walker would have been better..he should be a bigger star...

I saw "I Am Legend" in Imax on Friday. The Batman trailer was the highlight of the film. The sequence appeared to be one of the scenes actually shot in IMAX. The sharpness and intensity of the shots are unbelievable. It is going to make a strong case for more films to shoot with the IMAX format. The audience applauded at the end and my wife turned to me and said "we are so there when that comes out". I thought this was an excellent way to tease an audience for an upcoming film.

As for I Am Legend--Bagus oh Crapus. Not sure why they decided to put this into IMAX theaters. The large size of the screen and image really showed off the weaker CGI portions. Sometimes the effects looked great and other times it was painful to watch Will Smith standing in front a grainy CGI Matte backdrop of a Manhattan street. Yeah--it was that bad. But I'm glad I got to see that Batman trailer. Ball's Yeah!!

vansmith, I was right there with you until you said Paul Walker :) Honestly, I didn't have a problem with any of the actors in Vice, and am a half-fan of the movie, but the dialogue should have been dialed-in a lot more.

I do like the Pacino line you quoted. Looks absolutely ridiculous on the page, but he sells it.

Who here has seen "LA TAKEDOWN" the Mann (written & directed) 1989 TV Movie/Pilot that essentially became the basis for Heat 6 years later?

Scott Plank was no Al Pacino...

I think there's a good reason why MARVEL properties work better than DC.

while the characters in MARVEL are just as silly as those in DC, they are at least real regular people basically, while those in DC are always stereotypes.

Heat is a personal favorite of mine, so I have say that I think Pacino is being slightly misquoted. I believe it's "head" all the way up it instead of "face." What can I say, that line used to be the ringtone on my phone....

p vice, the whole point of a reboot is that you can use villains previously used - but maybe you were being facetious.
anyhow, i loved seeing this in front of I Am Legend. It was much better than most of that movie. Can't wait for The Dark Knight.

Why so serious?

Um, dude, you *do* realize that you're talking about a single line of dialogue, viewed in complete isolation from the rest of its scene's context, right?

Maybe you should wait until you see the whole film before putting the cart before the whatnot.

Exactly, Bandsaw. That complaint did seem kinda odd to me. Makes me wonder what tophertilson would have thought absent that single line of dialogue. Usually nitpicky things like that are a sign that for whatever reason, you're just not liking the movie overall for reasons that may be bigger than or even have nothing to do with the particular thing you're nit-picking.

Well that 6 minutes was better than anything in Burton's BATMAN, which I watched again last night on TNT at 2 in the morning to confirm that it is indeed terrible. Palance would have made a better Joker.
