O'Neil on pirated holiday flicks & screeners

The Envelope's Tom O'Neil is reporting that pirated copies of Oscar contenders like The Great Debatersand The Bucket List showed up online before opening in theaters. He then did some snooping around about when Oscar voters got their last DVD screeners. Sweeney Todd arrived on Christmas Eve, apparently -- two days before Oscar ballots are shipped on 12.26.

That is pretty interesting about the late mailer on "Sweeney," "Charlie," et al...I think there could be something to this...

FWIW, I finally saw "Atonement" last night and was frankly underwhelmed - it is a GREAT story, but the film did not grab me...leading me to wonder if the lack of early award season noms for "Atonement" is not an oversight but a harbinger of weaker than expected Oscar chances?

I want to amend my comment above about the lack of early season noms for "Atonement" - I was thinking about the SAGs, not the Globes...I don't pay much attention to the Globes for getting an early line on Oscar...

Of course they're leaking like hell. Business as usual. Also, BEFORE THE DEVIL leaked. I was someplace the other night and someone put it on the DVD player. Crisp looking flick. Sad to say I couldn't stand it at all and thought it was a seriously ugly piece of work. I really wanted to like it but it seemed to be corrupt in every way down to its DNA. I was gonig to say "soul," but the flick doesn't have one at all.
