Mafioso (The Criterion Collection, 3.18.2008) Nino Badalamenti is a supervisor in a car manufacturing plant who hasn't taken a vacation in over two years. On his way out the door to visit his beloved childhood hometown of Sicily -- with his blonde wife and daughters -- Nino is handed a package by his boss and asked to deliver it to a powerful and influential Sicilian gangster named Don Vincenzo. Once in Sicily, Nino has a hoot seeing friends and family, but his wife has trouble fitting in and is unfairly dismissed as a snob by Nino's family. Even more worrisome, Nino finds himself entangled in an intricate web of secret mafioso dealings and is eventually sent on an unexpectedly... elaborate errand. (continued)

"Orphanage" HE quote

HE reader Pelle Vehreschild, writing from Germany, informs that the German trailer for Juan Antonio Bayona's The Orphanage uses quotes from four sources to sell it to the viewer, in this order: Der Spiegel, Time magazine, Hollywood Elsewhere and Variety. Here's the kickoff page.

So is this your official conscession that HE content is thinly-disguised advertising and not actually a journalistic endeavor?

p.Vice, it is pretty clear to anyone who reads HE that Wells speaks his own mind and doesn't work for anyone. His reviews are more often incendiary than amenable. You accusation wouldn't be so ridiculous if you directed them at Roger Ebert, for example. Get a clue.

Saw Wells' name on a trailer for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days prior to No Country last weekend as well. Anyone who says Wells was just whoring for that one isn't using all of their brainpower.

I haven't seen The Orphanage and can't speak for it, but 4 Weeks was good stuff. Wells is no quote whore.

I still think this movie looks amazingly average based on the trailer

p.Vice, I seriously doubt you even believe what you're suggesting. And when is the last time you had something good to say about ANYTHING? I suspect that you are a deeply unhappy person and am pretty sure that this is either a cause or an effect of your being a supreme douchebag.

Let's see, OddDuck... what's more pathetic? Me wasting my time calling Wells a quote whore or you wasting your time calling me a douchebag?

Maybe you don't think it funny how every movie that Wells praises soon buys advertising space on this website. No positive reviews = broke Jeffrey. Or is that not completely obvious to you?

Or maybe, p.Vice, it never occurred to you that studios might not want to pay to have their banner ads sitting right next to negative reviews and comments, so they take that into consideration before spending their advertising dollars?

If this is true, then does that in (in your mind) place anyone who says anything positive about any film deep into the studio's pocket?

p.Vice to Wiggumx - If that didn't occur to me, do you think I would have made the above statements? Or are you really trying to argue in favor of editorial content having an affect on ad revenues, becuase that more or less betrays the principles of journalism.

And we alredy know Jeffery's in this group because he admitted as such when asking for Paypal donations because his ad revenues had dried up.

But p.Vice, you seem to be saying that any time Wells has something positive to say about any film, he only has his wallet in mind and isn't being genuine.

If studios don't want to advertise their films when he says something negative about them, and he shouldn't accept ads for films he likes because you'll call him a sell-out, perhaps you should bankroll the whole site and eliminate the problem.

p.Vice, Wiggumx has it exactly right. of course movies that Wells gives negative reviews for are far less likely to be advertised here and vice versa - that's just the nature of the business. Really, when it comes down to it, you are intimating that Wells is a liar who writes "fixed" reviews for ad dollars. Think about that for a second. That's a pretty strong accusation for you to make based on no evidence other than your flawed bullshit "analysis". To be fair, I bet you were probably more focused on the snark value of your witty first post than the actual significance of what you were throwing out there.

Based on your cumulative posting history here, you come off as a shitbag and just a really rotten apple. Did something very bad happen to you in your past to make you this way?

Well, Oddy, does it make me completely rotten to enjoy watching you call me names like "shitbag" and attempt some kind of psychoanalytical dissection of a person you know nothing about instead of using your brain to formulate an intelligent response to what I've said? If so, I guess you must have known me in a prior life.

However, you are half right on the first count: I do like to make sure that the "snark value" (good one, that; lift it from some Juno reviews?) is in equal measure to the veracity of what I'm saying. A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.

And on topic here, I don't doubt that when Jeffrey loves or hates a film he's being honest. But how many middle-of-the-roaders do you think he soft-peddles to collect? Take Juno for example; he didn't really like it all that much yet still keeps on trumpeting its chances for Oscar nominations by posting about box office, etc. How much do you think this meaningless positive spin has to do with the Juno ads that were flashing at me a few minutes ago?
