The Screen Actors Guild award nominations ...blah, blah. No surprises, no startling calls....everything pre-digested, pre-approved, pre-vetted. Four noms for Into the Wild -- Emile Hirsch (Best Actor), Hal Holbrook (Best Supporting Actor), Catherine Keener (Best Supporting Actress) and Best Ensemble Cast. This is nonetheless the biggest uptick for Wild since the season began.

No Country for Old Men got Best Ensemble Cast plus one each for Tommy Lee Jones and Javier Bardem (Best Supporting Actor), and three Michael Clayton players were honored -- George Clooney (Best Actor), Tom Wilkinson (Best Supporting Actor) and Tilda Swinton (Best Supporting Actress).
Other totally expected standout noms: Daniel Day-Lewis (Best Actor, There Will Be Blood...deserved), Cate Blanchett (Best Actress for Elizabeth: The Golden Age...c'mon!), Julie Christie (Best Actress, Away From Her), Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose), Angelina Jolie (Best Actress, A Mighty Heart), Ellen Page (Best Actress, Juno), Cate Blanchett (Best Supporting Actress, I'm Not There...naturally), Amy Ryan (Best Supporting Actress, Gone Baby Gone).

Hey Jeff, I don't think Gosling, Viggo, Hirsch, Keener, or Tommy Lee Jones for NCFOM were "pre-digested, pre-approved, or pre-vetted." Those are some pretty bold choices. If they had nominated by Denzel, Depp, Knightley, PS Hoffman, or Ronan, THOSE would have been "pre-digested, pre-approved, or pre-vetted." Let's give credit where credit is due. (Also, Ellen Page is a Best Actress nominee for Juno, not Best Supporting Actress.)

A bit shocked by the omission of Philip Seymour Hoffman - a canceling-out effect, maybe? And what the heck has happened to "Atonement?" Somewhat surprised that it got nothing here...

Honestly, these are those most surprising slate of nominees I can recall. Complete shut-outs for Sweeney Todd and Atonement while Hairspray and 3:10 to Yuma get Ensemble nods? Who predicted that?

The picks for Best Ensemble, though silly, were certainly surprising. I don't expect a repeat for the big dance.

Agreeing with WorldofKJ here - I am betting that only "No Country..." will make it to the Oscar Best Pic list out of the Ensemble noms...but the acting categories look pretty strong, although I think Oscar will yield some surprises there, too...

Yes, I don't ever remember hearing Gosling, Mortensen, 3:10 to Yuma, Hairspray, etc. being mentioned as favorites here. And the biggest surprise was the kick in the ass to Atonement. Nicest was a little love for Tommy Lee.
I'm betting not enough people saw Sweeney Todd yet b/c Depp's a favorite with them.

These are definitely surprising nominees.
I agree with JHRussell that only NCFOM will make it to a Best Picture nomination out of the 5 Best Ensemble SAG nods.
Viggo and Gosling have to be getting some buzz at this point. Both have exhibited a great deal of range in their recent roles.

On a weak year Viggo might have stood a chance. This year he is up against some big boys and he does not stand a chance. Poor guy, he plays cool in a very effective way.

Taken into account that Depp will get in there, probably taking the Gosling slot, as I dont think the Academy will be particularly fond of LARS, how does Viggo not stand a chance? It's not inconcievable. He clearly has the support of his peers.

Actors like Viggo but he's not an Oscar-y candidate. He needs to get a nomination or two and not be so soft-spoken and dedicated to his craft and that's when the standard Oscar voter will decide that he's earned an award.

We are so busy looking at and talking about all the American actors who are getting nomed or snubbed, we forget that the Academy likes to spring a surprise or two and nominate a foreign actor or actress as well:
Take 'Diving Bell and the Butterfly', for instance. It's looking more and more like director Julian Schnabel is going to be nominated for a directing Oscar. This probably means that there will be a screenplay nod as well, which usually leads to an acting nod. That's why I am not ruling Mathieu Almaric out for a Best Actor nomination (Think 'The Pianist'). Or remember 'Talk to Her' a few years back?
I think we might see a surprise in the Best Actress category as well. Anamaria Marinca could sneak in for her role in '4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days'.
With the Best Actor and Best Actress Oscar races still up in the air, anything could happen.
