WAFCA Awards

The Washington, DC Area Film Critics Association (WAFCA) went earlier today with No Country for Old Men in four categories -- Best Film, Best Directors (Joel and Ethan Coen), Best Acting Ensemble and Best Supporting Actor (Javier Bardem). Michael Clayton's George Clooney was named Best Actor (what is this...?). Away From Her's Julie Christie was given the Best Actress award and Gone Baby Gone's Amy Ryan won in the Best Supporting Actress category.

Is a year with DDL, PSH and other heavyweights hitting home runs, indeed, what is this Clooney shit, over a lightweight version of The Verdict?

Not saying he deserves it but MC is a good film and Clooney is obviously beloved in the industry. I don't believe for a second that he will win the oscar though.

I would've thought he was more likely to win an Oscar than a critic's award. The Academy seems more prone to falling for celebrity.

He did fine in Michael Clayton, but it wasn't his best work and there were many other performances I liked better.

Oh well. No one asked me.

Even a Clooney NOMINATION for best actor, though is going to knock out somebody from the list of Daniel Day-Lewis, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Johnny Depp, Tommy Lee Jones, Frank Langella, Benicio Del Toro, etc.

Who on earth do you bump for Clooney??

Lol...Yeah, I actually lol'd when i saw Well's reaction to Clooney being recognized again. It is just too funny, man.

Why dig the Cloon get the win? Because not only is MC a GREAT fucking movie, but it is some of his best work in front of the camera.
Let him knockout Denzel. AG was only so so and nothing all that great (except for Josh Brolin's Noltesque turn).

What no one has mentioned yet is that Johnny Depp has failed to win anything so far. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember even seeing him as a runner up.

If he fails to get any major critic's nods, and his only win is Golden Globes musical/comedy lead, how much steam is he really going to have going into the Oscars?

I am SO happy for Daniel Day-Lewis and PTA right now.

in a perfect world, Javier Bardem is the lead actor of No Country For Old Men, he's in more scenes than any other actor in the film ... friendo

with absolutely no love or attention from the NBR or critics circles thus far (and likely none to come), i think it's time to remove American Gangster and all of the parts that comprise it's sum from the realm of oscar consideration.

Because of how much a certain percentage liked 3:10 TO YUMA, especially the bluehairs, I could see Russell Crowe getting a Supporting nod for it, but I agree, AMERICAN GANGSTER is toast.

I would think this does not look good for any Oscar attention for Zodiac.

American Gangster is entertaining, but it just isn't a "great" film.
Zodiac is technically perfect, but man, I remember a lot of films from this year more fondly than that one...so yeah, no surprise it isn't getting any love - although I hope Downey sneaks in an award/nomination here or there, since he was the most memorable character in the film.
And please Wells, Clooney was excellent in Michael Clayton. Sure it may not be as brilliant or moving as some other roles that other actors played, but Clooney was as good, if not better than he was in Syriana.
Best Actor 5:
Clooney
Depp
Hoffman (for which film, I dunno)
Langhella
Lewis

For the record, the WAFCA Best Actor nominees were:

George Clooney (Michael Clayton)
Daniel Day-Lewis (There Will Be Blood)
Tommy Lee Jones (In The Valley of Elah)
Viggo Mortensen (Eastern Promises)
Denzel Washington (American Gangster)

--And my vote went to Viggo.

Based on that list I guess it was a fight between DDL and Tommy Lee Jones and a compromise third place Clooney won out? Because I can see that happening.

Of course I know nothing about the way that particular group votes.
