Obama-favoring assessments

Two Obama-favoring assessments of what may/will happen at tomorrow night's Iowa caucuses -- one by Washington Post reporters Shailagh Murray and Anne E. Kornblut, another by Des Moines Register columnist David Yepsen.

Noteworthy Yepsen passage: "On Monday night at a New Year's Eve party in Ames, hundreds packed the Great Hall at Iowa State University and waited for more than an hour to hear Barack Obama deliver his well-polished stump speech.

"In that speech he does something interesting. He always asks for a show of hands of those who've never been to a caucus. (More than half the hands go up.) He always asks for a show of hands of those who are undecided. (Maybe a third of the hands are in the air.)

"Now, I assume here that someone who would devote their New Year's Eve to attending a political speech might just be a little predisposed to go out a few nights later to caucus for the candidate who delivered it. Just a guess."

When Edwards wins, I hope you remember you heard it here first. And if he doesn't, you didn't.

December 31, 2007 — Using the same polling methodology that successfully predicted the outcome of the 2004 Democratic Caucus in Iowa, InsiderAdvantage/Majority Opinion Research has been conducting a daily tracking poll among likely voters in the Jan. 3 Iowa Democratic Caucus, and it shows a statistical tie between Hillary Clinton and John Edwards, with Barack Obama starting to lag.

Clinton has 30%, Edwards 29%, Obama 22%, with 14% committed to other candidates and 5% undecided.

The survey was conducted Dec. 28-29 among 788 likely Democratic voters in Iowa. The poll has been weighted for gender and age. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4%.

Subtext of this article: you should like Obama because all the cool kids like Obama, regardless of policies or substantive issues.

Well (a) I totally disagree, and (b) my point is that Wells doesn't care about issues, hence his total disinterest in posting anything related to them on his site and his preference for casting Obama, in his own mind, as some kind of youth-oriented rock star savior.

Except when it comes to showing up for important votes that would require a stance and not a speech. And Obama has attacked unions as "special interest groups" along with his kowtowing to Repubs. He's a nice corporatist.

christian: Edwards actually gave in to the corporate
groups he criticized, so why should I trust him more than Obama?

Edwards at least has admitted some of his mistakes and he's far less beholden than Obama. None of the above is great, but the cult of personality around Obama bothers me.

"Oh, dear! Oh, dear!" cried Dorothy, clasping her hands together
in dismay. "The house must have fallen on her. Whatever shall we do?"
"There is nothing to be done," said the little woman calmly.
