At the end of the New York Film Critics Circle awards ceremony, No Country for Old Men producer Scott Rudin "came up with the Coen brothers at the end of the night and dedicated [their] best film win to Sydney Pollack," reports N.Y. Times columnist David Carr. Rudin's key remark: "If you grow up in New York, this is the award you hope you win and these are the two guys you hope you win it with."

First Pollack dropped out of his most recent project due to illness, now Rudin's paying tribute to him? Seriously, is he okay?

Hopefully it was just a big 'fuck you' to Armond White.

CJ, I think you're thinking of Lumet, not Pollack.

I think you're right.
Sadly, I was pretty pleased with myself too.

It's been widely reported that Pollack is ailing.
So kudos to Rudin and Assoc. for honoring him and here's my own person "get well" card:
"Three Days of the Condor" still kicks major butt. "Tootsie" also stands. "Out of Africa" is a terrific epic romance that's better than its rep.
And he's got another 6-8 films including some major friggin' hits, all of which have something/a lot of things interesting going on, from "Bobby Deerfield" to "Jeremiah Johnson" and "The Way We Were."
Sidney's also in the pantheon of directors who act and his corrosive turn in "Husbands and Wives" still curdles my blood.
And any man who values the work of Kryzstof Kieslowski as highly as Pollack does is automatically a good dude in my book.
And his partnership with Minghella has been based on friendship, taste and ideals, all of which are rare in this biz.
Respect.

I hate to sound like any kind of a gossip (and would love to be wrong), but I read about a month ago that Pollack was diagnosed with several late stage cancers and might not have much time left.
Aside from his directing, he's always been my favorite character actor.

Pollack's film of the Schrader brothers THE YAKUZA is easily one of the best, most subtle action films of the 70's. I advise all of you to watch how Pollack combines the widescreen choregraphy of a samurai film with the naturalism of the decade. And Richard Jordan is uber-cool.

This is sad. I too love his acting. NO one plays a prick better, especially in CHANGING LANES and the really great MICHAEL CLAYTON.
That's a compliment.

Who else but Pollack could get Oscar winning work out of Gig Young?
And Jeremiah Johnson is one favorite Westens (behind only The Canidate for my favorite Redford performance).
Good call on The Yakuzu, Christian. Mitchum is great in that film.
There is a connection to Sydney Lumet. They both are directors who got great performances from a variety of actors. Even when they had fight for them, as Pollack alledgedly had to for Tootsie.

He has stomach cancer that has spread. His granddaughter has posted some information on a message board that I read. She says he's fighting it as hard as he can.

Again, good on the Coens for their dedication to Pollack. I appreciate film makers that acknowledge their debt to other artists.
