Screen Actors Guild president Alan Rosenberg made it clear during a teleconference session with major celebrity reps and publicists earlier today to keep their clients away from the Golden Globes Awards on Sunday, 1.13. Oh, and Rosenberg doesn't want the talent attending the VH1 Broadcast Film Critics Awards next Monday either.
In other words, Rosenberg is saying that if NBC insists on broadcasting the Golden Globes Awards on 1.13, there won't be any celebrities in attendance because he'll be expressly telling the nominees not to attend. So don't broadcast the show, NBC, because you'll be wasting your time...got it?
In the wake of the latest Golden Globe awards hiccup, which is a statement from NBC spokesperson Rebecca Marks that "we are prepared to move forward with the telecast on Jan. 13," a bicoastal teleconference happened earlier this afternoon between Rosenberg and all the big-cheese publicists and representatives of the nominees who've been nominated by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, which is having its awards show on Monday night, 1.7, and the Golden Globes Awards (set for Sunday, 1.13).
During this meeting Rosenberg basically laid down the law, which is that no one can go to the Globes unless the Globes aren't televized. The SAG chief also said that while SAG can't officially say "we don't want anyone going to Monday's BFCA awards" (which is being produced by non-signatory companies Bob Bain Prods. and VH1), they don't want anyone going to the BFCA awards.
The BFCA request was apparently made because there's no red-carpet agreement, and therefore a video journalist interviewing a celebrity nominee could take a videotaped or webcam interview and sell it to a struck network. The Golden Globes bottom line is that SAG is eyeball-to-eyeball with NBC, saying to the network that if they broadcast the Golden Globes Awards the celebrity attendance will be nonexistent....so don't broadcast it or else.
Here's Dave McNary's Variety story on this.

Why is SAG getting in on the act in this official capacity? Let the Writers Guild fight its own fight...these morons are killing the goose that lays the golden eggs.

this is kind of fucked on rosenberg's part...the wga had already signed off on the bfca and agreed that there would be no picket line for celebs to risk crossing....seems rosenberg is creating unnecessary collateral damage.....

How do you figure that one scooterzz?
"The Globes have been thrown into turmoil and uncertainty due to the WGA's refusal to grant a strike waiver to struck Globes producer Dick Clark Prods., which offered to accept the same terms as David Letterman's Worldwide Pants banner. Instead, the guild has said it will picket the Globes, skedded to air on NBC, which has become a prime target of the WGA's strike campaign in the past few weeks."

Burmashave - I will say that if it is not illegal, it should be.
Something very fishy about this SAG maneuver...but the whole strike has stunk to high heaven from the start. The WGA legal action threats being leveled against Jay Leno seem nutty to me, too, even if they are legal...anybody have any insight on this?

the decision not to grant a waiver to the globes was made long before leno pissed off the wga... and the decision to pull actors from the bfca has no effect on nbc... the cca is broadcast on viacom's non-signatory vh1 (whose network affiliation is cbs).....

This is a horrible move on rosenberg's behalf. Slowly we will see the public sway against SAG. The globes for some reason people like and when no actors are there people will go will why not? Do you really think the folks who don't know exactly why WGA is on strike will understand why won't actors go this? I could be wrong...
In regards to the BFCA awards it's wrong... The show is on Monday night and now rosenberg says don't go, The show wasn't being affected by the WGA. This is so wrong.
If the HFPA had any guts and they don't they would say ok screw the actors no awards this year and they could point to SAG to blame! That would be perfect no GLOBES this year at all and can blame SAG!

it seems that rosenberg's little edict is just a way to ensure that only the sag awards show has any celeb draw....it has little to do with the wga and is just a way to make his little awards show bigger than the other little awards shows....what a fucking opportunist....

Union members do not screw over folks in other unions - especially to collect a crappy award presented by a bunch of weasel alleged foreign journalists.
Maybe the Golden Globes can go through the phone book and find people with the same names as the stars - Diablo Cody might be a hard one, but they could just get a stripper to fill in for her. Have the Name-alikes collect the awards.

Can SAG control the "red carpet agreement" situation at its TNT/TBS live awards show on Jan. 27?

The end of the year is usually slow on the feature side. There was hope it would be over by Feb.
It still could be, but the huge multi-nationals don't care and have deep pockets. Now that people are coming back from the holidays, this strike impact will be felt...and not just for the TV pilot season. I'm glad SAG is laying down the law for the Golden Globes. I grew up in a union household. Striking is no joke, it's a last resort intended to inflict as much damage in order to force those in power to the table. A strike is supposed to hit hard and fast then end. This thing could go on forever. When I lived in NYC there were transit strikes, garbage strikes etc. that would shut the city down. Hollywood is still standing despite all the btl people who have lost their jobs.
The studio don't give a crap about the writers, never have, never will. But the actors? That is a different story. Regarding public opinion, please, most people think actors make up all their dialogue. The strike will be settled when the studios decide this strike is more painful than negiotiating. It's already painful for the writers who don't make millions a year, which is 99 % of the WGA.
I don't give a flying fuck about the Golden Globes or the Oscars to be honest. All people care about are the dresses and ratings. Yes, I only started to feel this way once one of my friends started working as a producer on the Oscars and I saw how they determined who gets to present. It's a joke.
I hope this strike is over soon, so people can get back to work.
p.s. that line about Cody was priceless.

All this is little confusing to me. SAG doesn't want actors to attend BFCA because the press there might sell the interview footages to networks but aren't there also going to be the same press at the Indie Spirit and SAG awards who might as well sell their footage to networks or are they not allowed? Also they don't want actors appearing on talk shows that doesn't have a deal with WGA but even on Letterman or Conan, aren't actors still working for the studio by appearing on those shows to promote their films?
