Waxman on fixing Golden Globes

"What's wrong with the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. can't be fixed by making members sign waivers or by banning parties during balloting," Sharon Waxman wrote two days ago in the Los Angeles Times.

"The group needs, finally, to open its membership to a far broader pool, to encourage membership of bona fide journalists and critics -- maybe even domestic ones.

"With the timeout provided by the strike, NBC Universal president and chief executive Jeff Zucker can make this happen. He should fix the Golden Globes or take them off the air for good." And forego the potential of raking on $20 million in ad revenue? Jeff Zucker didn't get to be Jeff Zucker by thinking like a reformist.

SHARON WAXMAN is a frustrated, out of a job, nearly unemployable, piece of excrement.

Message to Sharon:
Sharon, the "National Enquirer" and "Globe" need writers like you. I heard they pay well.

Ms. Waxman's piece at the "Los Angeles Times" regarding the Golden Globes is racist, vicious and absurd all at the same time.
Her "reveals" about the HFPA are old hat and her only intent is to damage. She can not contain her hateful self.

Also, where has she been? Golden Globes, SAG Awards, Oscars, and all other award shows, they are ALL marketing tools for film and television, as well as its talent. They are entertainment events. What's wrong with that?

Does Sharon Waxman know that the "Los Angeles Times" makes 120 million dollars yearly in their entertainment advertising department (a lot of that money comes from those award events). Therefore, that's how they pay her fee to write an outdated and hurtful piece.

Her arrogance in thinking that the head of a network is going to take her advice on how he should program while she can't even hold a job.

Also, aside from her hit pieces, what else did she do lately to help others and/or contributed to both the film community and the public at large? The Golden Globes have.

I must add that the last thing we need at the "Los Angeles Times" is to have a New York unemployed hack writer stirring up crap.

So, what is Sharon Waxman's real problem?
1. Is her loneliness and personal misery forcing her to strike out at others?
2. Doesn't she get invited to events?
3. Is she jealous of the success of others?
4. Would she like to be a member, so that she could exercise her false sense of power, but no ones invites her?
5. All of the above

Finally, I must say that whatever the HFPA members are or are not, they all support a lot of people that like Ms. Waxman have to pay their rent. However, they do it through years of hard work by their organization, instead of through stupid, irrelevant and hateful pieces that do nothing to improve anyones lives.

NOTE: Sharon Waxman should know that the real Hollywood community feels that she should write her "hit" pieces for the "National Enquirer," "Globe" or maybe "The New York Times," not our city paper.

Uhh, wouldn't letting domesic journalists in negate the "foreign" part of Hollywood Foreign Press?

This woman needs to go away.

Waxman also needs to complain about how the Mafia needs to quit its Italian only policy for guys getting made. There are plenty of well qualified mobsters who should get membership even if their ancestors are from Russia or Germany or Nigeria.

Hollywood needs to quit glamorizing the Mafia with endless plays of the Sopranos and The Godfather until this organization quits its racist hiring practices.

scooterzz, it sounds like you also like to judge people that are not like you and that are successful. For your information, I have no dog in this fight.

No, I am not a member of the HFPA. Yes, I know almost all of their members as I know many of the members of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (last night LAFCA's award event was horrible, too long, the sound was horrendous, the host didn't know what he was doing...embarrassing).

People should be measured by their actions/deeds, not their looks and/or country of origin. This is America and everybody can take a shot at success (in this case fame and money).

I have a suggestion. Why don't you and Sharon Waxman start your own association and year after year deliver a great entertaining TV event like the Golden Globe awards?
P.S. scooterzz, be aware that to produce an awards show in town means a lot of work.

So, in this case, the HFPA membership should not be judged by their "entertainment critique" expertise and how important and major their magazine/paper organization is. They should be judged by how successful their Golden Globes event has been for 65 years.

Yes, sometimes one has to question what is going on with an organizaton, but it should be done based on facts, not racism, jealousy and bias. Most of Waxman's writing is old news.

A good example of an "awards con," as Waxman would say, that should be investigated is the Broadcast Film Critics Association, which continues to try to push their awards event, so that they are No. 1 in town, but to no avail. Out of 18 awards that they bestowed this year ONLY 8 winners where in the premises (10 winners were not in the room). In addition, their host was not good and their ratings were abysmal. But the most important fact about this organization is that its president, Joey Berlin, makes a lot of money from that show (talking about conflict of interest). He is the co-executive producer of the BAFCA award show together with Bob Bain.

Anyhow, scooterzz,a little advise to you "my friend," do not judge the book by its cover...results matter...unemployed Waxman's racist and dated diatribe doesn't.

I side with Waxman on this (nice to see Wells is, what, three days late to the party on this though). The organization is a joke and until they do open it up to, say, you know real journalist it's hard to take them seriously. For years Waxman was the only journalist who seemed to remember that she didn't work for the studios she cover OR wanted a production deal with them after she left.

And next time Abraham, get Wells to give you your own guest column if you are going to have a case of literary runs like that again.

abraham -- i assure you, i am not judging the hfpa by their 'looks and/or country of origin' but rather by their 'acts/deeds'..... i (along with many others) have had to tolorate the rude and self-entitled behavior of these ancient and barely employed boors for over twenty years at various junkets, press events and festivals.... their lack of civility and common courtesy is their calling card.....and, while i'm sure there must be (at least) a few decent members of the hfpa, as a group there is no evidence to prove it...... they really need to clean house and quit using their access for personal photo ops.....

As it was, the jar made her catch her breath and wonder what had happened;
and Toto put his cold little nose into her face and whined dismally.
Dorothy sat up and noticed that the house was not moving; nor was it dark,
for the bright sunshine came in at the window, flooding the little room.
