All over but the shouting

This 2.16 N.Y. Times story by Don Van Natta Jr. and Jo Becker goes into pretzel-like contortions in order to not say what's really going on, but it comes into focus if you settle into the quotes and the careful parsings and hints and whatnot. Bottom line: unless she pulls off a total nuclear blowout in Texas, Ohio and Pennsylvania, Clinton is toast.

Van Natta and Becker's report about a decision by Al Gore and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and others to "remain neutral for now in the presidential race in part to keep open the option to broker a peaceful resolution to what they fear could be a bitterly divided convention" is, don't kid yourself, a slapdown to the Clinton team's proclaimed intention to purse a backroom winning strategy via superdelegates.

It is particularly a rebuke to that statement by Clinton's communications director Howard Wolfson that the Clinton campaign will "not concede the race to Barack Obama if he wins a greater number of pledged delegates by the end of the primary season, and if necessary [to rely] on the 796 elected officials and party bigwigs to put her over the top," as reported two days ago.

This story doesn't read like much at first, but read it over a second time and let it settle in. Trust me, it's the next thing to a death-gong.

Hillary could blow Barack out of the water in Texas, Ohio and Pennsvlvania. She could but she almost certainly won't. Barack will probably match her in Texas delegates, and he could even get more votes. The notion of the space aliens in Ohio and Pennsylvania voting in a radically different way than the way the voters in Virginia and Maryland have just doesn't figure. It would be just too weird.

And by the way, John Edwards is still acting like a squishy, calculating old-school candy-ass. The man is pathetic.

Hey Jeff --

I am definately voting for Obama. I love the guy and am inspired by him when I hear him speak. But your rants came desperately close to convincing me to vote for Clinton in my caucaus last weekend.

Your comments are so petty and small-minded. Jesus dude, can you just tell people why you like Obama without painting Clinton, Edwards, and every other person whom you beleive stands in his way as the anti-Christ? I have issues with Clinton and I agree that Edwards is being wishy-washy for whatever reason, but come on! Lay off the vitriol! It's not even effective in influencing people who already agree with you.

Gotta agree that the anti-Clinton/Edwards/whomever isn't Obama sentiment isn't helping any. I love Obama, and if I were a voter, I'd think twice based on the rabidness of some people online.

The most interesting polling data regards how Obama supporters feel about Clinton and vice versa - the unfavorable feelings by supporters toward the opposition is extremely high, something like 90 percent - voters do not find these candidates interchangeable...this is shaping up as a huge fight that will leave the party divided and hopefully scarred beyond repair (at least I hope until after November)...the Dems had this one in the bag, and they are getting ready to fuck the whole election up, and I love it!

How is it petty and small-minded to quote Hillary and Howard Wolfson's stated strategy to burn the house down and take everyone down to hell through the spring and summer with a superdelegate fight? It's a fact. She's commonly regarded as a smart, able politician who's also snarling, frosty, fiendish, avaricious, diabolical. She's Richard Nixon plus Tracy Flick plus 40 years and...what, this is new information to you guys? Or, what...you're telling me Obama's cut from the same cloth? That he looks at the world in the same way and responds the same way? Nobody but nobody believes this, and it's more than a little bit embarassing if that's what you're saying or implying. Oh, and Lazespud? Go ahead and vote for Clinton, man. Follow your heart. There are millions of indecisive fence-sitters out there, people saying to themselves "I think so, probably, I'm leaning that way, maybe, I hope so, I'd like it to be this way but who knows because if it isn't that way I might change my mind," etc.

Lazespud, did you even read the article? Clinton's people are publicly saying they'll push for a backroom/superdelegate deal. But Al Gore and Nancy Pelosi are working behind the scenes to prevent this. I don't get where Jeff's comments are "petty and small-minded."

In the meantime, I also think Jeff's right (and so is Gore if you read the article) that Obama will eventually tip the scales with a string of wins. Hopefully here in my home state of Pennsylvania which, I admit, loves it some racism.

If they become their party's candidates, McCain will easily bite off Obama's head and eat it for breakfast. I crave to have a Democrat in the White House next year. The only strong fighter who will be an equal match for McCain in this gladiator ring is Hillary Clinton. This will be a grand fight between two lions and not with one lion and one lamb (Obama).

Obama has shown himself to be very weak in a debate. Without the flowery oration, he's not that great at fending off attacks. That's why I feel in a debate, McCain could cleave him up. Of course, McCain could just as easily look like an angry old coot, which is why he has little chance of getting young cross-overs.

This year the Oregon Primary might mean something and I'm casting my vote for Obama, my wife's supporting Clinton. But if Clinton manages to hang on and win the nomination I won't feel like I'll be voting for the lesser of two evils, I'll be proud to vote for Clinton. I don't want to watch American troops dying every day for the next 100 years. I want to be able to have affordable health care when I retire in three years. I want to be proud to be an American again. I don't remember feeling so moved by a presidential candidate as I have been by Obama. Say what you want, it's your right, but the guy excites me, he gives me hope and that's not a bad thing.

People saying they're considering changing their vote because of Jeffrey's posts? That more ridiculous than anything Wells could ever write. It's one thing to believe there's not much substance behind Obama's charisma, and another to claim that your political conscience is so easily swayed by such pettiness.

Give me a fucking break.

Uh, to Jeff and Lazarus, I was joking about changing my vote from Obama to Clinton. No matter how much Wells' drumbeat leaves a bad taste in my mouth, It's not going to get me to vote any particular way.

That said, I'm also trying to be rational about my choice. Jeff, you say, "She's commonly regarded as a smart, able politician who's also snarling, frosty, fiendish, avaricious, diabolical. She's Richard Nixon plus Tracy Flick plus 40 years and...what, this is new information to you guys?" You're right, it's not new info, but I honestly don't know that it's accurate info. I GET it, people hate her and have hated her for a long time. But I just don't see the factual basis for so much of this. I really don't see what in her past makes something describe her as "snarling" or "diobolical."

I appreciate the efforts of Gore, et al, and I definately do not want Clinton to win the nomination if a clear majority of dems want, as I want, Obama to be their candidate. But if it IS very close, I definately want both candidates to duke it the fuck out. Seeing how Gore rolled over and played dead the instant the voting was done in 2000, and the Kerry did the SAME THING in 2004, I think it would be refreshing to have a candidate in place that would, under not circumstances, give up.

But anyway, my point Jeff, was to encourage you and others to consider occassionally focussing more on why Obama is great and deserves the nonimation, and less on why Hilary is evil, and deserved to roasted on a spit. You seem so excited last month to attend their debate, which in theory was a way to find out which of the two candidates is more in line with your personal beliefs. Recapture some of that excitement...

Yeah, she really showed those HMOs. Oh, wait...!

christian: "Obama has shown himself to be very weak in a debate. Without the flowery oration, he's not that great at fending off attacks. That's why I feel in a debate, McCain could cleave him up."

McCain didn't even have the balls to cleave up Bush in 2000. He'll bend over every time Obama looks good in the spotlight.

laze: "But I just don't see the factual basis for so much of this. I really don't see what in her past makes something describe her as "snarling" or "diobolical."'

The fact that she voted for the war and refuses to acknowledge it was a mistake, just so she can win, sounds pretty despicable to me...

"Seeing how Gore rolled over and played dead the instant the voting was done in 2000, and the Kerry did the SAME THING in 2004, I think it would be refreshing to have a candidate in place that would, under not circumstances, give up."

She wouldn't give up; she'd just repeat Republican talking points like they did.

Chicago: Well Rudy is counting the votes, so...

christian: I was vocal about it, when she stayed with Bill...

While on a purely practical level I have to agree that Jeff has ceased to be an objective arbitor on this election, I can't say I blame him. I'm not even remotely convinced that Obama is the end all/be all when it comes to solutions to the problems that need fixing in this country. But before I cast my vote I came to two simple conclusions that pushed me into the Obama camp:

First, from the very beginning of the campaign, Hillary's obvious sense of entitlement rubbed me the wrong way. Until Obama began gaining momentum, the Clinton campaign had been operating on the assumption that her life inside Bill's presidency would be her trump card and color her with the experience she needed to get elected. This always annoyed me. Whatever her involvement in Bill's two terms, assuming her connection would automatically get her the nomination was flawed. From my point of view, I think Bill's presidency was a legacy of missed opportunities. From universal healthcare to "Don't ask, don't tell", he missed so many chances to make a real difference. To my mind, I see his time in office as 8 years of trying not to rock the boat or at the very least, failing to fight the good fight. He never dug in and really fought for anything important. He just got by. And while she isn't Bill, nothing she has done so far leads me to believe she will be any different. In fact, her short history in the Senate leads me to believe all we will get with her is more of the same half-ass effort(Iraq war anyone?). I mean she has been so all over the board on Iraq, immigration and any number of truly important issues that I don't think anyone can truly explain what she stands for.

Second, and probably most important to my decision to vote for Obama is that I believe he will shake things up. There are several issues I disagree with him on but I think he has the will to fight the good fight and not back down, win or lose. While he is part of the Washinton machine, I think his campaign has shown his willingness to go to the mat and not worry about who he will offend. No president is likely to be universally loved. But I believe they all want to be and too many of them make decisions based on that need. I believe Bill Clinton was a prime example of this. When I look at Obama I see a man who still longs for that acceptance but ultimately will make the right choice regardless of it's popularity.

Of course this is all just conjecture on my part. But I guess I feel like we have enough background on Hillary to have a decent idea of what kind of leader she will make. Honestly, I think she would make a decent one. I just believe Obama will make a better one. With Hillary, I think we might see some small changes for the better. With Obama, I see the potential for changes on a grander scale. He strikes me as someone who won't be satisfied with doing the bare minimum and will aspire to greatness.

Just my two cents.

HoopersX

PS

One last thought. While I begrudge nobody for being brought to tears from time to time, I believe Hillary has opened up a can of worms with her tears. I am not trying to say they were insincere at all. But she is running against an opponent who has the decency not to use her tears to a tactical advantage. But man oh man if the Republican machine won't just kill her in a general election. Think about it, McCain, the war hero and former POW being shown as the strong leader in an advertisement juxtaposed against images of Hillary crying during the Democratic primary. Anyone who doesn't think the Republicans won't use this is sadly mistaken.

Hooper: "Whatever her involvement in Bill's two terms, assuming her connection would automatically get her the nomination was flawed."

It came pretty damn close to being a reality, though. But she managed to burst the Clintonites' nostalgic bubble with her condescending attitude towards the voters.

"From my point of view, I think Bill's presidency was a legacy of missed opportunities. From universal healthcare to "Don't ask, don't tell", he missed so many chances to make a real difference."

The "This Modern World" comic strip made a joke about that, where one of the characters says, "At least he came up with Take Your Daughter To Work Day".
