N.Y. Times Magazine editor Lynn Hirschberg narrates a montage of fifteen youngish actors (Seth Rogen, Ellen Page, James McAvoy, Josh Brolin, etc.) who broke through this year with strong, distinctive performances in high-calibre films. Here's the article itself.

Josh Brolin turns 40 in two days, so he's not exactly youngish.

40 is youngish in Hollywood. If you're a man.

Did anyone else notice Hirschberg describes Jack Nicholson's role in "About Schmidt" as a "romantic lead"? Is she above being fact-checked, or what?

Ellen Page is already beautiful, but her most alluring quality is how beautiful she's obviously going to become.

Translation: In about 10 years, we'll finally feel comfortable getting turned on by her.

As is often the case with cinematic breakthroughs, Page had two of them: the first, “Hard Candy,†was her initial artistic birth; “Juno†then deftly married artistic cred with popular acclaim.
And X-Men 3 was seen by more people than those two combined, plus you could even decorate your Myspace page to be totally dedicated to Ellen's character in it. The most-quoted line in the movie was directed at her, too.
