The Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar, presented by James McAvoy and Josh Brolin, is presented to Joel and Ethan Coen for No Country for Old Men. They're going to win Best Director also (of course), and of course Best Picture. (Right?) Three Oscars for sure. Those dark horse notions about Clayton or Juno...forget 'em. I think.

What was going on during the second part of the Coens' speech? I thought the 'Homer, Cormac McCarthey' one-liner was amusing, but then the speech trailed off and ended gracelessly.

I'm probably wrong, but wasn't that Ethan who turned it over to Joel, who then blanked.
I actually thought the mic went out and he was just like 'F--- it'

Have you read the book, Tough Guy? The thing practically read like a script. I loved the movie, but the power didn't come from the Coens' work on the screenplay.

You're right to a point, Josh, but not when you say the adaptation didn't power the movie. Yes, the movie's dialog is pretty much straight out of the book (right down to "friendo"). But many of the action sequences and other wordless scenes were created for the movie. The dog in the river, the shootout in the Eagle Hotel, the magical escape from the hotel room in El Paso -- those were the Coen brothers, not McCarthy.
