Cotillard's Distinction

Variety critic Robert Koehler wrote a while back to ask if Marion Cotillard's Best Actress win is a first for a French actress or not. Is it? Koehler believes either way that it's the first time that the same actress has won the French (i.e., Cesar) and American Oscars in this category.

Frenchwomen Simone Signoret (A Room at the Top) won Best Actress and Juliette Binoche (The English Patient) won Best Supporting Actress, but both were for English-language performances. The only foreign language perfs to win acting Oscars are Sophia Loren (Two Women) and Roberto Benigni (Life Is Beautiful). This makes three.

You could throw DeNiro in The Godfather: Part II into that category.

It's also not the first time that all four acting awards when to non-Americans. It happened in 1965 when Rex Harrison (My Fair Lady), Julie Andrews (Mary Poppins), Peter Ustinov (Topkapi), and Lila Kedrova (Zorba the Greek) all won.

Koehler is right about Best Actress, but it's worth noting that Adrien Brody won both the Cesar and the Oscar for Best Actor for THE PIANIST.

Did Luise Rainer in the "Good Earth" speak Chinese? What about Emil Jannings, but that was in 1927 for silent film.

Steven Spielberg watches the oscar-nominations with Joe Spinell (ripped from the "Maniac" DVD):

Didn't Leslie Caron win for "Gigi"?

No, Caron didn't win.

And my memory of The Good Earth is that if there's any Chinese at all in it, it would only be the occasional familiar phrase like "kowtow."

Mgmax --- sorry I was way off! She wasn't even nominated, but Gigi won best picture - I wasn't in a place where I could look up the history....

Add Benicio del Toro, who spoke mostly Spanish in TRAFFIC.
