From The Bottom Up

Starts off slowly, ambles along, not bad, heard it before, etc. And then during the last minute or so, it all comes together and suddenly people are on their feet. [Taped today -- 3.21.08 -- in Salem, Oregon.]

The labelling of Obama by the fear machines of both the Clinton campaign and right-wing broadcasters has been vile, and yet here I am thinking along these lines myself. I'm referring to the fact that Barack's candidacy has made me feel more in league with the African American community than at any time before in my life. And then I think about the continued success of Tyler Perry's films, largely due to support by black audiences, and I go, "What the...?"

A serious, please-consider-it, open suggestion:

Add one more category at the top of your beautifully designed new site, right next to the heading "Hollywood Elsewhere." Call it "Washington Elsewhere" "Election 2008" "Obama-Christ" or whatever. And then put all of the political posts in there. All of them.

Maybe once in a great while, even as often as every third day, make sure a really compelling Obama is God / Hillary is the Devil post is also posted to the main HE page, but also has encouragements to remind people to go to your other page.

That way us trolls can stop bitching.

And by the way, the first thing you should put up is that full 10 minute youtube video of Rev. Wright... where they got the "chickens coming home to roost" comment from. If you watch it, you end up realizing how completely and totally out of context his statements were... and you end up feeling bad that Obama felt forced to distance himself from the guy. In fact he was basically quoted a US amabassador, and he was putting it in the context of not lashing out at perceived enemies, even though our hearts were telling us to in those raw days after 9/11. I can't speak for the other stuff, but on the "chickens" quote, he wuz robbed.

Did you buy the Rolling Stone issue w/ Obama on the cover Wells? Better yet, did you frame the cover? All that was missing was the halo.

I jest. I quite like this guy. Too bad I can't vote for him. My country could use someone like this.

Just a side note: One of my friends is an Obama campaign volunteer and she is complaining that the primary is taking so long to end. She and the others are tired, but they keep on going. this campaign is too damn long!

Frankly, I could not stand to listen to a five minute clip of Hillary or McCain or, God forbid, George Bush, because I feel my brain dripping out my ears. But this guy Barack is a pleasure. If people don't respond to the obvious intelligence and openness (of course, many don't) on display here, or oppose the approach he espouses, then obviously they're on another side. We will see who comes out ahead in the end.

Frankly, with the mess there is to clean up, and with the mess that people will create for him, we should be thankful that a smart, reasonable, ethical guy offers to do the job at all. It's a rare opportunity and do we not need the kind of change he's talking about? Oh yes we do.

About "chickens coming home to roost," why does that phrase throw people so much? It's a homespun way of expressing the central principle of everything. "You reap what you sow." "Karma's a bitch." "Can't stop what's coming," and so on and on. There should be no mystery about this. The only argument comes from basically the kind of sociopathic criminals who think they will forever get away with their bullshit.

The only mystery about it at all is the question of which actions have brought about which reactions. You can never tell exactly, even though all the flamethrowers trot out their own pet prejudices. What we can do, the only thing, is to make our present actions firmly grounded in ethics and good practice. But there will always be those who want to dominate the world through force or subterfuge, who try to get away with their selfish abuses. To them belong the chickens.

If Barack can make this is a public issue that America needs to address, he has a better chance to show ability at dealing with international issues. McCain already has and Barack issued a statement, but we need to boycott the Olympics unless they stop killing before nations unite there.

Wells to lazespud: One more complaint about the political stuff and I'm going to ban your postings. Drop it. I've said repeatedly what the deal is with HE -- movies as a spiritual and theological base but other stuff entangled, including politics and, if I so choose, problems with the downstairs washing machine -- and I'm really not going to listen to you and all the other little bitches whine about this any further. I've had it. Fair warning.

Give 'em Hell Jeffrey. This is one of the most important elections of our lives. Much more important than any film.

I loved how Obama admited he's human and won't be a perfect president. I'd love to have a beer with the guy. I can't imagine Hillary would be as fun to have a glass of Chablis with.

I love James Wolcott these days:

Look, I understand the knocks against Hillary Clinton, truly I do. There are no flaming arrows fired her way that I haven't seen traverse the air before, no bill of indictment drawn up containing charges with which I'm unfamiliar. Reciting her sins and liabilities has become a familiar refrain, but if it's the Gregorian chant you live by, if you find Hillary Clinton such an insupportable choice for the Democratic nomination that you prefer to suckle your pride and idealism rather than soil your conscience should she be at the top of the ticket, fine, have fun with that. But, please, I beg of thee, could you at least spare the rest of us your longwinded, preeny, pious dirges?

Kos has often mocked public protests, and his admins follow suit in writing off mass demonstrations. So you're wrong. Comparing the WTO protests to helping McCain become president?

I am so sorry about your recent loss; it must be an awful time for you, but I appreciated reading your candid and thoughtful recollection of your sister's visit to Italy...

Well, the WTO protests *were* about Republicrats like the Clintons supporting McCain-like policies, so, why not?

It's official. The Rev Wright flap is over. The idiots who wished it had legs are finally accepting it doesn.t Now whenever they mention if it it's put under the heading of "Remeber WAY back when when that preacher man..."

The economy has taken center stage. Hard to bask in the glow of a few political zealots attempting to garner sympathy by pretending they were hurt by Wright's words when the county is slipping into a second Great Depression.

And of all the candidates who has the answers? who will lead us?

Hillary, full of political ambition, no ideas and no concern for anyone other than herself?

Mc Cain, the third presidency of George Bush?

Barack, the man who always seems to have the answers, inspires people (that means he gives people CONFIDENCE, which happens to be the basis of our economic system in case the Barack-haters have forgotten) and can lead in a crisis.

I cannont wait for January 2009.
