One of those insufficiently educated over-40 guys, interviewed by Steve Croft two days ago on 60 Minutes. When Croft tells him that Barack Obama-is-a-Muslim rumor isn't true and asks if he realizes that, the guy kind of half-smiles and more or less holds his ground. Charming. America the beautiful.

Let's see, not being gracious enough to admit to making a mistake when it has been pointed out.
Least he doesn't insult Croft and then admit it. Unlike some, hmmmmmm....

Atomization. We are 300 million self-suffcient units of information, collected from sources that cater to us and us only. Nothing is true except that which we can fact-check against our own beliefs. You have yours and I have mine and that's about as far as we can get towards a mutual understanding. In the future, it won't be nation vs. nation, religion vs. religion, ideology vs. ideology, corporation vs. corporation; it will be me vs. you times three billion.

This "swift boat" attack has been going on for sometime against Obama. The key to defeating it is his ground game, his volunteers, etc. Till now they have served Obama well.

Really Milkman? You are one sad puppy. That is a truly pessimistic outlook on humanity. I think we're doing okay, in a world historical perspective. It sounds like you've read THE ROAD one to many times.

So the guy was leaning toward Obama in spite of his misgivings about Obama's being a Muslim and not knowing the national anthem? Count me completely mystified as to the rationale of the average American voter. Maybe there is hope for an open atheist in a major American political office in my lifetime after all.

This guy really is a perfect barometer of the Average Joe, probably well-meaning but filled with ignorance unchecked by easy access to actual information. He probably votes American Idol.

It's not the ignorance that dismays as much as the laziness. It wouldn't take a whole lot of digging to find that Obama is a Christian, but these people don't want to be bothered. As such, they are the perfect foils for the Bush administration.
We start to learn the moment we're expelled from the womb; maybe even before. For some, this process continues through life, but for too many, the learning process screeches to a halt somewhere between birth and spawning.

To answer your obviously rhetorical question, Walter: Sure, there are dumb people everywhere, just not as many as there are here. I've lived in Italy, Vietnam and Mexico City, and the level of erudition amongst the average Joe is ten times what it is here. Not even close. With the exception of those at the bottom of the food chain in the most destiture of third world nations, no one is as ill-read, ill-informed and just plain ingnorant as the garden variety middle class American, preferably the type who thinks getting a liberal education at (Insert College/University of your choice here) is tantamount to unlocking the mysteries of the universe. And what's worse, some of who we consider the best and brightest are positively enamored of their ignorance, as if it is a badge that testifies to their authenticity. Dubya is the pefect avatar for this country: arrogant, entitled and dumb like a fox. Of course, what we lack in intelligence we more than make up for in brute force and muscle, so if you insist on being a knee-jerk patriot, you can console yourself with the fact that if we get into an argument we can't intellectually win at least we can haul off and punch someone in the face.

Fuck, I misspelled ignorant as ingnorant. I guess that dismisses me from the conversation. Maybe I should just stare at Kate Hudson's glorious ass for the rest of the day. That seems like the most American thing I can do right now.

Frickin' A, I'd rather vote for a Muslim than a Mormon. I wonder why no one ever says, "He's a Muslim? What's wrong with that?" Frankly, the record of Christians in government has got us into exactly the present mess. Screw 'em.

Many of us argue and disagree, but it seems we at least will vote, that's saying alot. Some of us may bitch at Jeff for a variety of reasons, but at least we're involved and talking back. Besides we can always enjoy some of the links Jeff shares. Soon I'll go home and celebrate my daughter's 20th birthday and check out the elections returns. There are priorities.
