Amazon.uk as well as DVD Active, another British site, are announcing a two-disc The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford coming out on March 31st for 20 pounds (along with Blu-ray and HD-DVD editions plus a regular single-disc edition). No Warner Bros. publicists were around this afternoon to answer why this two-disc package hasn't been offered to the American market.

The second disc offers a documentary, called "Death of An Outlaw," that examines the life and death of the real Jesse James and also includes interviews with all the key cast and filmmakers. The package also offers a hard-back 44-page book about the film, the legend and the characters.

I want to see this movie again, badly, but I keep holding back because I want it on Blu-Ray. The GF never saw it in the theater, and frankly, I don't want to show it at home on anything less than the best.
Grrrrr. C'mon Jeff, make this happen!!

The impression I get is that there's supposed to be a "director's cut" of the three hour original version on down the road sometime. Of course the same was said about The New World two years ago and that has yet to materialize.

Or as they'd say in IN BRUGES: Fook you.
Yes, that 3 hour New World Cut; I saw the 2 hour 50 minute initial cut that Malick pulled from theaters after something like 10 days in limited release. Amazing stuff. Criterion needs to do a special edition on The Thin Red Line and The New World, as well as Jesse James.
The test screening cut of Jesse James I saw in April of 2007 was certainly longer than the theatrical cut.

Shit actionman I bet you've recapped this many times before but I still gotta know:
Was initial cut of THE NEW WORLD with additional scenes of the middle section. The Pocohantas/Smith stuff? Because I was hypnotized during that portion. Or is it hard to even tell the differences when it comes down to it?
JESSE JAMES, well, I kind of think it's perfect as is. I'm a little worried about a longer version. Again, was there a major difference?

Re D.Z.'s link to the RIGHTEOUS KILL trailer:
It's not going to be HEAT II. More like a mashup of MAGNUM FORCE and DEATH WISH. Or, to be more specific, the kind of product that could have emerged from Cannon Films in the 80s/early 90s with a teaming of Chuck Norris and Charles Bronson and direction by J. Lee Thompson.

I would also donate Mr B's organs for a director's cut of Assassination of Jesse James.
I'd give up an organ or two for Criterion editions of The New World and Thin Red Line. Love 'em both.

That was a horrible, horrible trailer for Righteous Kill.
And I already own the 1-disc Jesse James, so I doubt a 2-disc one will ever find its way into my home. I can't remember the last time I watched a "special feature" of any kind.

Umm... Dave... this movie is already available in Blu-Ray, I bought it from Amazon several weeks ago. Man, how it didn't win for cinematography amazes me, although TWBB was well shot too.

Geoff:
Many of the differenes in both the extended cuts of The New World and Jesse James were atmospheric. Lots of extra nature shots, more dialogue-free passages of visual information, more meandering (but good meandering). Both of those films are tone poems, and the extra footage just made it a richer sit. I wouldn't necessarily say that there was major plot stuff in the longer versions of both, it just felt richer and fuller. I think the earlier cut of Jesse James played with the timeline of when Jesse started to round up his crew to kill them off. And as I recall, there was a bit more stuff in The New World when Bale takes Pocahantos back to London.

I'm always surprised that the Europeans often get a lot of films unavailable here. Go check out Amoeba for a sample. Thankfully, you can get a full-region DVD player for cheap these days.

And it's nothing to get worked up about, either. I'm guessing the UK release is two discs only because PAL requires more space (having a higher resolution than NTSC), so they split the movie over two discs and put the documentary on disc two to pad out the package a little.

Okay, so I overlooked the existence of a one-disc PAL version. A separate two-disc release seems utterly pointless if the only differences are a booklet and a half-hour documentary, so I'm hoping the Amazon specs are leaving something out.
