The Toronto Star's Peter Howell has passed along a clip of the only completed footage of The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, the 2000 Terry Gilliam project with Johnny Depp that folded after a week of shooting. It runs about six minutes: Neither Howell nor myself are sure if this ended up in Lost in La Mancha, the '02 doc about the aborted attempt to make this movie, but neither of us remember it.

This footage wasn't in the doc.
As much as I am fan of Gilliam and Depp, maybe it's just as well it wasn't made. What the hell happened to Gilliam?

It's chilling how Depp predicted Carson Kressley.

I don't think the clip was included in its entirity. But some of the clip was shown.
I remember seeing that first Depp closeup...
What did everyone think of Tideland?

Assuming a 2 hour movie, I sure hope that the other 114 minutes of it would've been better, but I dunno.
FWIW from Wikipedia: The Man Who Killed Don Quixote:
"In August 2006, Gilliam indicated at a post-screening Q&A for Tideland that the complex legal case concerning the film's collapse was finally being wrapped up, and that the rights to the script are hopefully being given back to Gilliam and co-writer Grisoni in the near future."

Admiral82,
I think you're right about that first scene with Depp - maybe it was in there. Another thing about the doc - when he first showed up with Gilliam discussing the movie he had this bemused Johnny Depp movie star aura about him. Enjoyable documentary.

The documentary was fascinating, but those scenes from the unfinished film are just painful. Painful.

The first few scenes in the desert form the basis of much of the doc. There were ONLY three days of actual shooting on this and one aborted half-day later on, I just watched the doc again recently with the news regarding his new film and Ledger's death. So this is all way early in the shooting schedule. Also, almost all the audio was rushed due to NATO fighter planes flying overhead, with the hopes of picking up better audio tracks later.

This footage comes from the aborted film's cinematogher, Nicola Pecorini. It's been up on his website for months, maybe years. I've forgotten. In the footage, I enjoyed the characterization of Don Quixote himself, but the Depp character is problematic.

Admiral,
I've been dying to talk about Tideland! Just saw it for the first time a few weeks ago and have yet to meet anyone who's seen it.
My take? It's a masterpiece. Stay with me here...but I think it's "Empire of the Sun" set in the Heartland and without the gloss. Don't get me wrong, I love EOTS... think it's one of Spielberg's best films... but it seems like the version J.G. would enjoy a bit more.
It's the only film I've ever seen that shows what the mind-state of a kid who's been a victim of drug abuse both physically and mentally could be like. It's sick, hard to watch at times, darkly funny, whimsical, cartoonish, uplifting, gross, enchanting... and contains one of the best child-actor performances I've seen in a long time. The little girl completely carries it.
Gilliam was right. It's not for everyone but, I swear, I have not been able to get it out of my head since.
Regardless of how you felt about...you've gotta give Gilliam a HAZA! and an addition to his brass-balls trophies for doing something like that.

So does this mean Gilliam was aiming for an R-rated Don Quixote? If so, I'm wondering if he'd have second thoughts, considering what happened with Sweeney Todd.

The reveal of Depp in bondage was in the doc, or something similar (I remember a sweeping shot of a landscape around the rock that then revealed people). As was the Depp dialogue with the fish (the scene that was filmed in front of the investors). Also, I think the scene with Rochefort and Depp both riding was when they realized Rochefort was in too much pain to continue shoorting. The dialogue between the guard and Quixote, or between Depp and Quixote, or the splashdown into the water were not in the doc.

Depp's performance does seem kinda weird but it's hard to get a sense from such a small scene of what the movie might have been.
I'm amazed, having seen Lost in La Mancha, they were able to edit that much together.
As per usual with Gilliam, it certainly LOOKS good.

While, I think Gilliam has made some incredble films in the past (Fisher King, etc), I think he's currently so completely out of his f-ing mind that, sadly, there's no masterpieces, let alone competent films, coming from him ever again.

I was fortunate enough to see this masterpiece on the bigscreen, and it has stuck with me ever since.
Unfortunately, the DVD release was botched, but I look forward to the corrected release on Blu-Ray, someday.

Craptastic: Very well put, I agree 100%. Interesting parallel. I never made that connection myself. I love EOTS, its probably in the top 3 favorite Spielberg films of mine.
That girl was spectacular. All her scenes with dolls on her fingers made my jaw drop....
I was pissed about the DVD release. Of course, I bought it before I found out about the hack job. I've heard the framing wasn't terribly botched. Still very annoyed though. It was never released in my area on the bigscreen. So I have no frame of reference on that.
