Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008)
Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves'
Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign,
Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the
Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered:
Cloverfield was a major success.

I wonder how long it'll take for China to ban your site next. ^_- So why is doing business with them fine, but lifting that embargo against Castro wrong again?

Lifting the embargo isn't wrong, D.Z. If it had never been in place, Castro would hsve fallen in the 70s. And you'd be going on about our support for the evil Jorge Mas Canosa regime.
Here's hoping the Chinese are embarassed horribly by the Olympics.

we can't boycott China since they now control our economy. they have trillions of US dollars. Ever try to buy something not made in China? They have invaded us One WalMart at a time. Instead of troops with guns like we have in Iraq, China controls us with an army of blue vests.

Yay, free-market. And of course we don't boycott those countries that secretly rule our economy. Cuba? No prob.
At least our leader, always looking to help the oppressed, has this to bring to the table:
The Associated Press WASHINGTON - The White House said Thursday that China's crackdown in Tibet is not cause for President Bush to cancel his attendance at the Beijing Olympics. Presidential spokeswoman Dana Perino Bush's position is that "this should be about the athletes and not necessarily about politics." She said that Bush, in accepting the invitation last year from Chinese President Hu Jintao to attend the Olympics, told him that the games would "shine a spotlight on all things Chinese."

Mgmax: The humiliation of China via the Olympics is already beginning. Athletes are refusing to train there because the air quality is so atrocious (many are skipping the opening ceremonies and just arriving for their events to avoid the air) and at least the USOC plans to bring its own food to the games for fear Chinese food laced with steroids would cause athletes to test positive for the drugs. The USOC may not be alone on this. These games will be a disaster and the IOC was incredibly foolish to award the games to China.

Well, what I'm saying is, what's at fault is the Chinese government, the country does not have the freedom to choose it's government, thus do not blame the people for what's going on in the country, when people write things like "..those motherfuckers" and "..hope the Chinese are horribly embarrassed.." just rubs me in the wrong way. It doesn't sound to me like people are only disgusted with the government, but its people as well. And that feels wrong.

I don't feel like the vitrol is directed at the people. It sounds like we all understand it's their repressive government.
And instead of our limp President taking a stand, he slinks off with a bullshit appeasement. Where's all the talk of spreading democracy now? In the bank.

Yeah, I know I'm weird today. And, no, I haven't been drinking or smoking. The whole "let's open up trade with China" idea was so that they'd be less iron-fisted[which I actually agree with more than "Let's have nukes pointed at each other indefinitely like the USSR."]; but now they're just fascist and rich. [Not to mention polluted.] I

They also do a good job of colliding into one of our fighter jets.

How many people run the government, and how many people actually live there? I remember Bill Maher using what happened in Romania as an example that there have to be enough people "willing to die in the streets" to end a dictatorship. So I imagine the Chinese are fine with the status quo, since they don't seem to care much what happens to Tibet, Taiwan, or even the Falun Gong. In fact, from what I hear, the place is becoming more like Latin America[i.e. stratified wealth]than North America.

1) You're citing Bill Maher as an authoritative source? Go read some Gramsci or something, geez.
2) It's kinda difficult to argue that a country which has 200 officially reported "mass incidents" per day (at least in the last year they bothered to provide statistics) is populated by 1.3 billion brainwashed, uncaring sheep -- particularly when you consider that these "incidents" are almost invariably illegal.
3) Wealth inequality is indeed a huge problem in China (and a subject of concern to practically every one of its 1.3 billion craven, cowardly, borderline-lobotomized greedhead residents), but curiously enough, India has it even worse, despite significant advantages like free speech, free assembly, free elections, etc. And I would argue at least one reason it's so bad in China is because the government seems to be borrowing the U.S. model of combating wealth inequality with minor tweaks to the tax system instead of structural adjustments that might address the root causes (among developed nations, the U.S. is pretty much the worst possible model when it comes to equitable wealth distribution). Could it be that the whole issue is getting complicated?
