As much as I really don't like TRAINING DAY all that much, each successive Hayter effort has been worse. DARK BLUE was a boring muddle and HARSH TIMES had some ideas but was sort of a mess. One thing all three had at the center was a dynamite lead peformance. Will Reeves bring that? Also glad to see Hugh Laurie's in it. When Liam Neeson get sick of waiting, he'd be my choice for Lincoln.
Really Burma? I rather enjoyed Dark Blue; as I recall it had some moral complexities on the part of Russell's character that made the film very satisfying. I've only seen it once so I don't remember it vividly...though I do remember Scott Speedman being a bit cheesy. Ron Shelton does sports movies and cop films only; so cool. Still think Tin Cup and Bull Durham are his masterpieces, with White Men Can't Jump coming up just behind them.
David Ayer's script for Training Day was, in my opinoin, freaking phenomenal. Sure, it's preposterous and lurid and crazy, but it takes some balls to pull that script trajectory off. There are genuinely riveting scenes in that film, with some excellent set pieces. I also thought the ending, while a little over the top, was really satisfying. His dialogue is brilliant however, and while some people were annoyed with how much slanguage was used in Harsh Times, that film is also excellent. Much more brutal and vicious; Bale in another uncompromising performance.
I haven't seen/heard much on Street Kings; not sure if I will see it in the theaters or on dvd. Something tells me it will be dvd. What's interesting here is that Ayer is not a credited screenwriter...Ellroy and Wimmer are credited.
ellroy wrote the original story, then a completely reworked script was written by wimmer and ross...ayer never spoke to or saw ellroy until he screened the movie for him (ellroy said he liked it) ... bottom line - there's very little ellroy here....
and....
jay t. just cracked me up......
Ellroy is a true American genius, so I'm pretty disappointed to hear there's not much of his stuff in here. (There wasn't much in Dark Blue either.) Here's hoping White Jazz gets made. Great novel--and would have been perfect for Clooney.
Nick, sounds like something they heard at a Cypress Hill concert years ago. Seems like brand delusion for Searchlight, but a date movie to rival "Once" because Whittaker had a special barber he demanded.
nick -- it's one of many classically bad lines from 'point break'....... and a live/stage version of 'point break' recently ran here in l.a. (and in several cities around the country)......
I was actually out at Bells beach off the great ocean road in Australia last year and couldn't help but quote that line. Never saw the live stage version but I'm sure it's a thing of beauty...

James Ellroy wrote this? That makes me a lot more interested than anything else does.
