Mafioso (The Criterion Collection, 3.18.2008) Nino Badalamenti is a supervisor in a car manufacturing plant who hasn't taken a vacation in over two years. On his way out the door to visit his beloved childhood hometown of Sicily -- with his blonde wife and daughters -- Nino is handed a package by his boss and asked to deliver it to a powerful and influential Sicilian gangster named Don Vincenzo. Once in Sicily, Nino has a hoot seeing friends and family, but his wife has trouble fitting in and is unfairly dismissed as a snob by Nino's family. Even more worrisome, Nino finds himself entangled in an intricate web of secret mafioso dealings and is eventually sent on an unexpectedly... elaborate errand. (continued)

Weekend Tracking

21 (Sony, 3.28), the Kevn Spacey-Robert Luketic-Jim Sturgess-Kate Bosworth movie about MIT kids taking the casinos for millions, will be the only big performer among the new films this weekend. It's tracking at 67, 48 and 23, which means $20 million and then some.

David Schwimmer's Run Fat Boy Run, which snuck last weekend, is at 39, 28 and 6. Kimberly Peirce's Stop-Loss, a vital, compelling, believably acted drama about an Iraq War veteran that's running against the tide, is tracking at 62, 29 and 6. And Craig Mazin's Super-Hero Movie (MGM) is running at 72, 29 and 6

Watch Superhero Movie take the weekend. Wells, did you see 21 yet? Part of me wants to, but then part of me sick of that trailer, and the horrible CGI comp of Vegas from the suite. Irritates the hell out of me, but I usually agree with you on flicks, so I was curious.

(Thanks for the Drillbit avoidance tip)

Yeah I have this weird desire to see 21 as well.

And I'm also curious if that shot of Spacey and the Vegas backdrop from his penthouse is CGI or a hi-def camera. Either way it looked odd.

No interest in 21; I will be shocked if it does over $20 million opening weekend.

Very much looking forward to Stop-Loss

It's become a tired refrain, but what the fuck happened to Spacey?

Looks like the new version of "The Day the Earth Stood Still" will be about global warming. http://www.darkhorizons.com/news08/080324e.php

We can only hope that Superhero Movie will do for the lame-ass parody film what Semi-Pro did for Will Ferrell sports send-ups. One too many trips to the well.

I was sort of excited about seeing 21, until I read the book and found out the movie was another example of Hollywood's reluctance to have non-whites carry movies like this.

BurmaShave, Kevin Spacey has been the artistic director of London's Old Vic since 2003, and intends to stay in the job until 2013. My sister's about to fly over there to see him and Jeff Goldblum in a production of David Mamet's Speed-the-Plow.

Spacey and Kate Boswortth have this weird "thing" going on. I can't believe it's just coincidence that they've done three films together.

God, I HATED Stop Loss. It was a mess. It played like a "best of" assembly of cliches from every war film of the past 35 years. A really bad screenplay.
