Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

All That Glitters

Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Big (Chris Noth) get engaged, Samantha (Kim Cattrall) has moved to an LA beach house, Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Harry (Evan Handler) get pregnant, and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Steve (David Eigenberg) grapple with infidelity." -- from a solid, well-reported New York Post piece about New Line's Sex and the City movie.

The article says that a good deal of emphasis will be given to glamour, clothes, bling, glitter -- all the stuff that turns shallow women on. I hope it goes to Cannes so guys like myself can shred it with impugnity. Unless it's good, of course.

''Shallow women''.The kind that go for 'galumphs'?And the women you'd rate as ''7's, 8's, 9's''?

I think you'll find, Mr.Jeffrey Wells, blogger extraordinaire, that plenty of women, ''shallow'' and otherwise will go and see this film precisely because it revels in all things shallow and fantastical and is as such, fantasy. Then they'll leave the cinema and go back to their non-fantastical lives with none of these things. But if I say you are fundamentally ill-equipped to comment on such a film, then I'd have to admit I am the same, regarding Iron Man. But of course that fantasy film is a profoundly deep, contemporary comment on today's society. And in no way shallow, facetious or reeking of Teutonic ideology.

I'd say that today's cinephiles have about as much reason to give a shit about this movie as the cinephiles of 1966 had to give a shit about "Munster, Go Home."

Unless it's good, or course. Ar ar ar.

I think every man forced into watching this thing should be promised an act of oral sex after its over. And maybe during. And probably before.

What happened to Spoiler warnings?

Anyone who doesn't think SJP is sexy should check out a black and white shoot she did for W a few years ago.

Sex In The City was a pretty good show, and not as shallow as one might assume at first glance. It had an important impact on modern culture, being sexually liberating for women in a much different way than the bimbo-focus of "girl power" etc. Many men have benefitted from this show in a lot of situations and some of us don't even know it. I'll admit that the fact that they shoot wider than the drama warrants in order to show of the latest designer clothes is a bit off-puytting from a storytelling perspective, and making a film so long after the show is a bit odd. But it might just have something to offer, maybe some extra gravitas due to the years since the show ended. Don't rule it out as a quality afternoon just yet.

Wait a minute! How in hell did Jeffrey manage to NOT tie this into the election? I'm stunned!

"all the stuff that turns shallow women on. [You know, the types that are marching in lockstep to the Hillary drumbeat.]"

Okay, I'll tie it into politics.

You know what would have been jawdroppingly ballsy enough to actually justify this being a movie? Starting it as a typical Sex and the City episode, dirty talk and supposed wit, and then 15 minutes into it, the first jet hits the World Trade Center. And then play it serious from there, how 9/11 shakes up the lives of the most vain and vapid characters on TV.

The core audience would be throwing shit at the screen, but at least it would be more than an extended TV episode.

Speaking of which, the utter box office failure of The Ruins (which I understand was not half bad) cannot be sitting well with M. Night.

Mgmax, believe it or not, your version of SATC was exactly the one I wanted to see. I even wrote an essay right after 9/11 and used that as a plot device to wake up those awful self-absorbed women. My editor cut out that portion. He liked the show. I do not. And it's a tad smarter as Magga says, but not that much.

I'm not going to read the Post piece an account of I don't give a shit, but everything Jeff quotes appears to be in the trailer. Is there more to the article than that or is this another fine example of investigative journalism?
