Back To This

This spirited exchange between Vanity Fair Daily's Elizabeth Hurlbut and MCN's David Poland about repeated schlong exposures in Judd Apatow movies -- and particularly Jason Segel's trifecta in Forgetting Sarah Marshall -- is the most thoughtful and fully-considered exploration I've read anywhere.

HE regulars are sick of my posts about Segel's physicality, but I may as well remind everyone that there's a reason why Terry Southern sometimes used the term "gross animal member." Wang shots are tolerable, depending, as always, on the how and why. My problem with Segel's Marshall displays arose because I was simultaneously forced to contemplate his Michelle Pfeiffer-sized man-boobs. A double whammy.

I hope they don't put ROCKY down, I don't think it was his fault ... although you never hear about BART doing that kind of stuff

It just ups the bar for what you can show in an R film concerning genitalia ... what next, the semi flaccid Prince Albert pierce shot? The best cinematic and recent crouch shot was a brief but in your face shot of a woman in Wayne Kramer's Running Scared

Then I shall quote Homer Simpson and say, "The human wang is a beautiful thing!"

It's probably not a big dreal, but in the feature David Poland confuses which movie Kate Winslet pees in. It's not Hideous Kinky, but some other tiny film who title I forget and am too lazy to look up but which is about deprogramming some brainwashed cult member. Hideous Kinky is actually a pretty great and very evocative movie about a type of western experience in Morocco that's likely not reproducible today. Great flick with no onscreen urination...

Yes, that's the one. I remember it only vaguely and not fondly at all. Hideous Kinky though is a great film and Kate Winslet does show her big boobies in it for a little bit.

And in my earlier post, by "who" I meant "whose". While I'm at it, not sure "urination" is a word, but you all got my drift.

I think it's testament to Winslet's fearlessness as an actresses that these two films under discussion were her next releases following Titanic. While she hasn't been doing crap lately (Finding Neverland was damn close), I admire her choices from that period, which she followed up with Enigma and Isis. It's nice that she didn't go slumming for a paycheck, or to prolong her popularity. I actually found a used DVD for $3 of Holy Smoke at a video store that was going out of business, and I look forward to seeing if it's as good as I remember it.

Of course, she capped off that period my making The Life of David Gale, but how was she to know Alan Parker was going to make the worst film of his career?

Strange, I’d see that as adding a believable verisimilitude to the scene, if anything. I think your average Hollywood Actor’s gym-sculpted physicality is completely at odds with the far richer scope of human beings on offer in the wider world, and it’s often hard to suspend disbelief because of it.

Men play blue-collar workers with white-collar gym bodies, or cowboys with skin that has never seen exposure to any elements. Women play Playboy-airbrushed prostitutes, or believe that donning a pair of glasses and putting their hair up is all it takes to turn them into a wallflower. It leads to horrid movies like ‘Mr. And Mrs. Smith’ – manikins on parade. If I can’t believe in them as characters, not actors, then I can’t care about what happens to them.
