Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

Can't Catch a Break

Roger Ebert's attendance at Ebertfest (4.23 to 4.27) is uncertain due to having suffered a recent hip injury after falling during a visit to the Pritikin Center in Florida. He's now recovering at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. "The show must go on!" Ebert has stated in a press release. "I am doing fine and if the doctors clear me, I will be there to welcome our guests, including Ang Lee, Paul Schrader, Richard Roeper, Richard Corliss, Sally Potter, Christine Lahti, Rufus Sewell, Timothy Spall, Michael Barker and many others. But whether or not I am there, the audience will see some amazing films."

Even his irrational love of Crash and Juno can't quell my admiration and respect for that man.

(Although his 2-star review of Die Hard still pisses me off).

Josh,

Especially when he later gave a laughably bad sequel to a Die Hard rip-off (Speed 2) an astonishing three-and-a-half stars!!!!!

To be fair to Ebert, who has given some questionable movies a thumbs up, he only gave Speed 2 two stars.

I love Ebert, he's by far my favorite movie critic. However, it still annoys me he gave Fight Club two stars. There's a been a few that I feel he's missed the boat on but that's the one big one for me.

Very upsetting to hear that he's hurt himself but I am glad to know that he'll still be writing. His passion for watching and writing about movies is untouchable.

Ok, neither one of you are actually correct. Ebert gave Speed 2 THREE stars. Here's the proof.

Here's the offending Die Hard review, which was actually followed up by a 3 1/2 star Die Hard 2 rating a couple years later.
