Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

Chuck Todd Knows

I love this description of undecided Pennsylvania voters (possibly as high as 8% right now) by MSNBC's Chuck Todd as "bowlers, hunters, beer-drinkers....the cultural conservatives." You can literally see his brain deciding not to say (take your pick) the 21st Century Archie Bunkers, the timids, the go-alongers, the dolts, the lacking-in-conviction crowd, the blue-collar dipsticks.

He's right, I suspect, about the likelihood of the Nanooks breaking for Clinton at the last minute -- that or not voting for her at all. If it's the latter her expected Pennsylvania win will be kept to five or six or seven percentage points, and will be therefore dismissable.

I'll try not to take the bubba-bait on this one, but Jeffrey you should make the effort to realize that unlike you, not everyone grew up in a blue-blooded Northeastern family of intellectualists and socialites, or went to an elite prep school followed by four years at Harvard.

That being said, it always floors me when there is a Presidential election and two days out people are undecided.

I recall Frank Luntz talking to a group of Ohioans the Sunday before the '04 election and most of the people didn't know if they were gonna pull the lever for Kerry or Bush. "Duh, jee I dunno. The one guy was in Vietnam or something, but the other guy seems nice enough, too. Huh."

Some experienced hand in politics, I forget who, I forget even whether he was Republican or Democrat, once referred in all seriousness to undecided voters as, "You know, . . . morons."

My brother knew a guy who only decided who he was going to vote for in the last day or two because he wanted to wait to see who was out ahead, so he could always vote for a winner. It gave him a special feeling to always vote for a winner. A pretty typical undecided voter. You know. A moron.

Nemo's post reminded me of my favorite bit of dialogue from Blazing Saddles, Gene Wilder's assessment of the people that Cleavon Little is now the new sheriff of: "You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know...morons." Probably could apply to some of the independent voters as well.

This is funny. Most people don't give a shit , so they wait until the last minute to decide. It will be that way this time, when they're in the voting booth, look at the choices, and just choose one. What a joke. Glad I don't vote.

Of course, Chuck was pimping the MSM gospel when Olbermann grilled him on the idiocy of the ABC debates.

It's bizarre to see erstwhile Obama supporters systemically denigrating what were once solidly Democratic voter blocs (when did "blue-collar" become a pejorative?) while the candidate himself is making strenuous efforts to bring them back into the fold. For Obama it must be a bit like hosting a formal dinner party and then watching helplessly as the guests swing from the chandeliers and set the couch on fire. You gotta wonder if the Democratic nomination is even worth anything at this point...
