Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

I didn't even know they were working on MIB III. Will Smith just doesn't look at all himself.

Seriously, though, why is del Toro still messing around with this crap when he should be working on The Hobbit. Right Jeff?

But I need my glorious Shaky Peter Jackson Cam. No movie like this is good without it. C'mon!

Pretty much what they showed at ShoWest a couple weeks back... what is that music accompanying it? Is it from 300?

Smells like the Chronicles of Riddick to me.....another dumb and unnecessary sequel that no one asked for. I am predicting that this and The Hulk will be huge bombs.....unless The Hulk is amazing. Anything less then amazing will make it a hard sell.

I'm in a group of people, much smaller than I thought, who really enjoyed the first HELLBOY. Nevertheless, that looks pretty non-sensical. Also, is David Hyde Pierce not reprising his voicework as Abe? Is Doug Jones actually doing it? I hate recasting, but that'd be awesome. He's been screwed a lot lately.

I think it looks like a lot of fun. I really enjoyed the first, and have been looking forward to this.

And yeh, Doug Jones is providing the voice this time. He's been voicing the animated version, so I guess they decided he could pull it off.

I was fine with Hellboy, didn't think it was awesome, didn't want to claw my eyes out watching it, it was sorta what Sky Captain wanted to be, but this looks about 50 times better. Hope it's not just cool character design but actually solid filmmaking.

Guillermo Del Toro is growing into a cinema master and this looks great. If you enjoyed "Hellboy" and haven't seen his longer cut you should check it out. The longer version added in about 10-15 minutes of character shading and it makes a big difference (more than I expected.) Can't wait for this.

I really liked the first 3/4 of Hellboy, and I was OK with the last 1/4. This looks like a whole movie of the last 1/4. I hope I'm wrong, but I won't be seeing this without encouraging reviews / word of mouth.

AGREED!!!

Why is Del Toro wasting his time with this meaningly film. He could be doing so much better.

Well, then, the Hulk is doomed. Everyone knows that Spider-Man is Amazing. The Hulk is merely Incredible. Of course, Iron Man is Invincible, but I think he'll do fine. After all, the X-Men made money and they were only Uncanny.

Rich: The Hobbit would basically just be LOTR with younger characters. Anyone could direct it, and it'd make money.

Jeff: If Hellboy 2 comes with a reasonable budget, it could at least be more profitable than Riddick. The problem with Riddick was that you needed to see the original flick to get into the second one. But Hellboy's just another superhero flick which happens to be a sequel. I'll probably agree with you on The Hulk, though. Doesn't even try to stand out from the competition.

Burma: I also liked the first Hellboy, but felt the origin story hurt the pacing. It should have been brief, not tied into the main story.

So anyway, the good news is that Del Toro impresses me once again, and makes me wish there was a live-action Berserk movie he could be directing. [Of course, a live-action Berserk would basically be Conan the Barbarian, so...] The bad news is that there still probably aren't enough people who saw Pan's Labyrinth or the original Hellboy to make this one a hit. [Couldn't they have said, "From the director of Blade 2" in the ad..?]

I enjoyed the first Hellboy but wasn't blown away. It was fun enough to watch though. Great cinematography and art direction.

The sequel looks like more of the same. I'll see it but won't rush out to the theaters opening weekend.

It looks so, so cool - and then Hellboy shows up. I wish he had taken these designs and made an original film, not a needless sequel to a forgettable film.

I liked the first HELLBOY a lot. That said, this trailer doesn't look much different from what they showed before, and this also looks run of the mill (some say CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK, I say BLADE 2). We'll see.

I'm dreading this film to tell you the truth. After making such an artistic breakthrough with Pan's Labyrinth it's dispiriting to see Del Toro regressing to such fan boy piffle. He should be making European art house cinema not Hollywood wank like this.

And what's really sad/annoying is the fact that this is the film that Del Toro really wants to make. And with The Hobbit on the horizon I fear that we'll be waiting a long time for anther Pan's Labyrinth.
