I was disappointed after missing a screening of OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies, a French- produced James Bond/Austin Powers spy satire, at the Seattle Film Festival in June 2006. It had opened to great reviews and strong business in France two months earlier, and it seemed like all the rage. (As far as a French- made film can be said to be the rage of anything.) A year and a half later it played at the St. Louis International Film Festival.

And now it's here...almost. But too late! A little more than two weeks hence (i.e., on May 9th), it will finally open commercially in this country. I'm sitting here and I'm going, "They expect me to feel enthusiasm about an '06 movie?" It should have at least opened last summer. The current has wound down. Flatline.

On the contrary. With the anticipation building around the next Bond installment, and the whole marketplace of jacked-up action films that will likely disappoint, this could be a canny time to release this spy spoof.

Apropos of nothing, Jeff, it's been reported in the LA Times that Vicky Cristina Barcelona will indeed be at Cannes and that Scarlett and Penelope will supporting it.

I'm sure the distributor deeply regrets the loss of your ticket purchase or having to fill your seat with someone else at a press screening.

So thats what Keanu Reeves would look like if he was real man. Interesting....

As to your lack of enthusiasm for a 2 year old film (ironically, a period piece) - your shallowness is sometimes pretty amusing. Your gonna make a great cranky grandfather one day.

At least it will be quality competition for "Get Smart."

It's a movie set in 1955... I don't think two years will make that big a difference. Just saw it tonight and it's pretty funny, not hilarious but some good moments.

Not only is it a period setting, but the look and the feel of it seem to be of a classic style.
Your weird, possibly-facetious theory about shelf life might hold some weight with some contemporary releases, but this is different. "Far From Heaven" wouldn't have been hurt by a delay (and I'm actually surprised it wasn't delayed more than it was) and this won't either.

Decades ago, OSS was played by both
Kerwin Mathews (the original Harryhauden
Sinbad and Gulliver) and Frederick Stafford
(the stiff from Hitchcock's "Topaz")

Just remembered another OSS guy from the
60's series...none other than 60's Hollywood
hunk John Gavin (later Reagan's ambassador
to Mexico...and whose performance in
"Psycho" was stiffer than Janet Leigh when
she was lying on the bathroom floor) Gavin
also came within inches of playing Bond in
"Diamonds Are Forever" before UA finally
cut a deal with Connery.
