McCarthy Chat

I spoke this morning with Tom McCarthy, director-writer of The Visitor (Overture, 4.11 limited). He was calling from a train from Boston to New York. The reception cut out at one point, but is otherwise audible. The chat runs about 25 minutes.

Man, if you hadn't mentioned in the previous post that he was that shady journo in this season's the Wire, I wouldn't have realized who this was. Haven't heard the piece yet, but he got so much grief for his character on the wire; I've always wondered what it was like to be the center of the sole bit of negative response to something so rapturously received. (He's also one of the funny things in the trailer for Baby Mama)...

I loved the station agent; this movie sound interesting too; Jenkins is a terrific actor and it's cool to see him in a lead role.

He was great on The Wire. A lot of the negative response seemed to come from reactionary media members.

I'm looking forward to this film.

McCarthy got criticized for his role on The Wire? Where? I've not heard anything about this. What's the story?

McCarthy did an excellent job portraying Templeton. The problem is that he was one of the very few Wire characters who was not fully developed. He was a caricature on the basic level.

McCarthy mostly didn't get criticized, it was his character and storyline that critics seems to universally hate (though there were some that hated McCarthy). I loved the story line and thought the whole thing came together beautifully...

But I've never heard such an extended run of positive critical response as the wire got through this final season, with almost everyone singling out his character and storyline as something they hated...

His character was one of the best portrayals of a pathological liar I've ever seen. There was plenty of subtleness to the portrayal and the writing. It seems like many became so convinced that the story lacked subtext that they simply stopped looking for it, even though it was always there.

I will now rent The Station Agent. This guy is a good actor or maybe has a rotten heart, because as a huge Wire fan I feel he is a huge scumbag and a bigtime liar who will do anything to steal a Pulitzer :) I listened to the entire interview but had a harder time after I heard him say very early on "I went to Paris to write for a month..." Right at that moment it immediately occurred to me that this guy was born to sickly rich parents. Would love to find out I'm wrong...

Also, I think he called Jeffrey Wells "David" a few minutes after complimenting his blog. Oops.
