Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

I'd like it known that as I tapped out yesterday morning's box-office report, I considered and discarded the use of the word "fumble" in describing the opening- weekend performance of Leatherheads. Fair warning -- anyone who uses this or any other football term (tackled, thrown for a loss, field goal) in their box-office summary stories will be facing a slight blowback factor.

What blowback factor? You know it's gonna be the headline on Variety.

Shine A Light IMAX was an incredible experience

That final shot might end up being the shot of the year

Yeah, that was out of bounds. I would have punted or run an end-around. Calling a reverse now won't negate the penalty if you're holding stuff or posting clips. Do some up the gut reporting and forget the fancy play-action. If you anticipate negative commenters, don't kick it to them. Someone's going to run it back. Write a draft after scouting the free agents. And don't blame your game on the zebras.

I'm sorry, I'm an idiot, but I blame technology.

They should have just taken a delay of game penalty and punted until football season where the tie-ins would have given them more red zone opportunities.

I was going to applaud Muckle, but have to call him for travelling instead.

Somebody should have sent the script to the showers, and the playbook to the editors. If the movie had been about 30 minutes shorter, it might have worked. It was rather a painful, earnest failure.

WELL, Variety might yet succumb to temptation, but not today. "'Leatherheads' soft' was our headline.
