Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

"It was long hoped that Cannes vet Steven Soderbergh's Che Guevara double bill, The Argentine and Guerrilla, would premiere on the Croisette, but it seems that the director, who has wanted either both or neither of the films to play the fest, won't be able to finish the four-hour-plus opus by deadline. Evidently, Soderbergh has essentially finished the second film but, despite non-stop work in recent weeks, hasn't quite gotten the first half of the Benicio Del Toro starrer where he wants it." -- from Todd McCarthy's Cannes 2008 report in Variety, posted at 8 pm this evening.

That's big bummer. I've been looking forward to reading about the big Che double-bill (and seeing it eventually). Hopefully the wait will be worth it.

So Vicky Cristina Barcelona won't be shown at Cannes, after all. That's weird, because at one point the organisers asked Woody if he'd mind entering it in the competition. He refused.

Still, it makes more sense for it to premiere at Sen Sebastian.

So the tragedy of the saint's death was easy, but showing why we should revere a murderous thug is proving a little trickier?

Kind of like media coverage of Ronald Reagan....

No, more like the coverage of the Clinton campaign.

I'm enjoying the media reexamination of his presidency. Hillary's failed run is a true legacy killer (taking sexual advantage of a young intern should have taken care of this). And I'm REALLY lovin all the praise George H.W. Bush's term is now garnering, especially from Obama.

The anti/pro/whatever Che debate bores me to tears, I'm just happy that Soderbergh decided to direct a movie without Oceans in the title.

On a matter I hope we can all agree on, has anyone else here rented or seen in theaters Before the Devil Knows You're Dead? My God. Marisa Tomei. She has good genes. She succumbs to gravity just barely enough for you to know she is real. Perhaps some nicely restrained plastic surgery in the face and a little botox in the lips, I don't know, but she is gorgeous in that movie. And naked. A lot.

Tomei looks great in that movie. She is the rarest of the rare over forty, looks her age and looks great. Before the Devil Knows You're Dead? is pretty good film. If it weren't for Ethan Hawke's horrible performance it would be a very good film.

Jeff, I've been wondering for a while now: why go back and change the titles of your articles? Did you think that being broken hearted wasn't manly?
