Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

That story about Mike Nichols doing a low-budget film in the Hamptons is a bogus embarassment. It started with Dark Horizon's' Garth Franklin linking to a column item by Hamptons.com's Jennifer Tuesday claiming that the "Oscar-winning" Nichols is about to shoot a "teen horror film" in the Hamptons area called Breadcrumbs. It turns out that (a) it's another Mike Nichols (a guy who happens to have the same name) directing this thing and (b) Tuesday is a brilliant reporter. It feels wonderful to have wasted time on this thing.

Interesting. Could be a breath of fresh air in a genre in desperate need of it, or could be a complete embarrasment. Nichols is such a hit-or-misser that there's no way to tell. At the very least, it's always a curiosity when respected directors journey into genre masturbations. For now, I'm keeping faith that this will be a bit more watchable than Wolf. Yeah... remember Wolf... anyone...?

Wells: Garth FRANKLIN runs Darkhorizons.

And Televisiontears: If this is true, this seems less like "genre masturbation" and more like genre experimentation. Nichols, as far as I recall, has never made a teen slasher/horror film. So, given his typically cerebral approach to filmmaking and storytelling, I'd suspect that this project would be extremely different than Prom Night or any of the other recent horror flicks that have saturated the marketplace. Since he's not an Eli Roth or Rob Zombie, I wouldn't describe this project as filmmaker masturbation.

But let's see if this is even true...

The Graduate was on AMC today. I put up with their rotten commercial breaks for the last 1/3 of it or so. I hadn't watched it in a long time. It's so good.

As for him doing a teen slasher flick, well I'm interested.

Who knew that the organist/keyboardist for The Band was a huge movie geek?

You would have thought "Movies From Big Pink" would have been a better website name.

Actionman- I didn't mean "masturbation" in a deragatory sense, only in the sense that it can be fun for a filmmaker to step outside his or her comfort level, and to leave it at that. Masturbation is fun (usually), and can yield otherworldly benefits. You should try it.

Mike Nichols is directing a Garth Marenghi script? Awesome!

(I had to come up with something as obscure as Sir Digby Chicken Caesar...)

If I was trying to sum up Mike Nichols' career in 3 films, I'm not sure that those are the ones I'd choose...

(Why not What Planet Are You From?, The Birdcage and Gilda Live?)

Mike Nichols is in previews with THE COUNTRY GIRL on Broadway. Now, he could be spending the next three weeks shooting a horror film in the mornings and afternoons, but I suspect stars Morgan Freeman and Frances McDormand might be a little peeved; it opens 4/27. The IMDb shows that there are 15 "Mike Nichols" out there, including two who have dabbled in horror films, so this may be a case of crossed wires. If not, well, interesting...

UPDATE: Dark Horizons is now saying it's a different Mike Nichols so you were right btwnproductions. It was a fun idea while it lasted. I guess that's why Hamptons.com doesn't break more stories...
