Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008)
Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves'
Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign,
Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the
Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered:
Cloverfield was a major success.

I suppose it shouldn't be a surprise he's so funny. That might almost convince me to see it despite my intense disinterest for Simon Baker (as a leading man, I thought he was great in LA CONFIDENTIAL and THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA). Somebody give this guy a show, or at least I hope he keeps the videos up.
Also, HUDSON HAWK rocks. I'm too young to even remember it bombing or getting panned, so you people are just insane. I know the Cold War had just ended and things seemed so new and wonderful, but that's no excuse. Mordant screwball wonder. Also the best thing David Caruso ever did.

Interesting promo video, but Wow!-- Daniel Waters owns and lives in the house that Orson Welles died in? How cool...
But like he said, too bad that instead of Citizen Kane vibes, he got the later-in-life period where Welles couldn't get films made
(PS for some reason I was under the impression that most houses in the LA area didn't have basements)

That video is great.
Here's a long interview I did with Waters on his film a few weeks ago.

"If only someone had persisted in offering me a chance to see it."
? Wells are you kidding; just because this film had no one who was 6 or less degrees of separation from you, it has somehow slipped through the cracks? With all due respect do your job, or don't; but don't pass the buck.

It's a funny, twisted movie. Not Heathers-funny, but of course few things are.

There's an interview with Waters in Wednesday's L.A. Times and they mention that the spot where Orson Welles died is still masked off with tape. That's one interesting house and a funny video as well.

For work I once had to go to Henry Jaglom's house and later someone mentioned that Orson Wells had given him the house in his will. That particular house looked exactly like you would expect Wells to have spent his later years in - a Charles Foster Kane meets William Randolf Hurst by way of Grandma Moses thing on a sprawling lot in Santa Monica.
Anyone here know if Wells did give the house to Jaglom, but perhaps it just happened to belong to him. I have to trust that Waters is in the one he passed away in.
Somehow I have feeling one of the regulars will have the inside skinny on this.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who owns hundreds of laserdiscs in the original shrinkwrap with the pricetags still on (and thousands more I actually opened). Can someone hook me up with a time machine so I can go back and make 5 or 10 grand selling all that stuff at Dave's on Ventura?

I don't understand why Heathers is such a highly-regarded film. It had a couple of funny moments. Otherwise it plays like a cartoon. And I blame Waters for making it okay to pepper your script with obnoxious made-up teen slang and the career of hacks like Scott Rosenberg and Diablo Cody. Oh, they're so
cool. Totally razor.

Diablo Cody is the new Daniel Waters?
I'd watch a youtube show of Waters traipsing through his house selling stuff. He's got a reality show right there-- the ghost of Wells and Russian roomers-- would make for some interesting noises at night.
