Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

Saw APES last weekend at the Zeigfeld. Brand new print, will forever be one of the greatest movies ever made. I love the mere concept of both APES and 2001 being released in the same year. Perfect examples of the many different paths science fiction can take to greatness.

Okay, so now we've lost Jules Dassin, Marvin Wald (writer of Jules Dassin's The Naked City), Richard Widmark (star of Jules Dassin's Night and the City), and Charlton Heston (other star of Jules Dassin's Night and the City).

Peter Ustinov and Maximilian Schell need to get their earthly affairs in order fast.

Not sure if APES is one of the greatest movies ever made, but it's damn fun. Heston was great in the role. He had a great career. APES has fared much better than the much accoladed BEN HUR. That film has not aged well, IMHO. Though the charriot race is still one amazing sequence.

Sorry to be the one to break this to you: Ustinov died in 2004.

APES is timeless Science Fiction thanks to Heston's trailblazing Action Hero performance, the social commentary of the time and of course one of SciFi's best ever writers, Rod Serling, penning the script. The film ages very well and Chuck is a big reason why.

We've gotten to the point where even movie lovers like Jef Wells don't care about copyright infringement.

I still can't get over the fact that they gave the humans the ability to speak in the Tim Burton remake. That movie was a train wreck and wasted some amazing makeup work by Rick Baker.

Gee berg, thanks for the SPOILER warning! Another iconic Heston performance. He was up there with Olivier, the way he could chew the scenery--and I mean that in a good way.

Double oops, Mgmax. Heston wasn't in Night and the City.

Not like you. Got a fever?

Shit, Dark City, 1950. That's what I meant. So all surviving people in Jules Dassin films are safe. Maximilian Schell, Tatum O'Neal and Ruby Dee can rest easy tonight.
