Sunday Afternoon

So what exactly is Sean Penn intending to do on-stage at the Coachella Music Festival on Sunday, 4.27 from 2:10 pm to 2:40 pm? If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say that Milk director Gus Van Sant wants to shoot Penn (in Harvey Milk guise) giving a speech to a big crowd. He doesn't play in a band. Stand-up comedy?

That's a good theory, but I'm guessing it's something more politically oriented. Coachella has had people do spoken word sets during the day - usually once on the main stage and the other in one of the smaller tents. I have a bet with a friend that it will be something in regards to encouraging people to get the fuck out and vote in '08; my nemesis believes that it has something to do with New Orleans/Katrina relief.

I hope he used the oppurtunity to talk up the Shout Out Louds, one of the great bands in the world right now. Holy Fuck and Stars are also varying degrees of excellent. Haven't even heard of the rest.

Sunday is all about Holy Fuck (well, and Roger Waters). Austin TV and Autolux are really good as well.

Gogol Bordello is like a punk band fronted by Borat. I'm sold.

Sunday is my "whatever" day at Coachella. Aside from Roger Waters my day's pretty wide-open so I can't imagine morbid curiosity not leading me over to Gobi just to see what's the big deal. A part of me is hoping it's Penn unveiling his new career as a stand-up comedian.

coachella - minus radiohead = just an over-crowded desert with $10 bottles of water.

I didn't get passes to this year's show, because the line-up frankly underwhelmed me (save for Portishead, who are sure to tour this year with the new album, in any case). I didn't even know about this Sean Penn stuff, though. Weird.

Gabriel: Caught Holy Fuck at the Echoplex some weeks back. They pretty much melted my face off.

Holy Fuck is a band? My god, what are kids listening to these days?

Interesting, not necessarily my cup of tea, but I'd be interested in seeing them live. I think I should tell my grandkids about this band...

"(save for Portishead, who are sure to tour this year with the new album, in any case)."

There was a big article on them in the New York Times which basically said the shows they are doing right now in the USA right now are it-they won't be touring at all, because they don't enjoy it. So I would go see them now if you can.

Sunday is definitely a bit of a down day, but Saturday is the most loaded Coachella day I've ever seen: Prince, Portishead, Kraftwerk, Animal Collective, Man Man, 120 Days, Hot Chip, and Death Cab for Cutie are just my personal highlights, but there are probably 30 bands on that one day that I would see if I had the opportunity.

Personally, I'd prefer to see Radiohead on their own tour (as they are this summer) and let Coachella book headliners that I wouldn't pay $100 to see by themselves (such as Roger Waters and Prince).

not going this year, but had to chime in that, for the first five years, goldenvoice put on a hell of a show and didn't gouge for water (contrary to what someone said up there).

also, that Swervedriver/Spiritualized back-to-back should not be missed if you can help it.
