The Fakeness

Spoiler whiner alert (read no further): Residents of mine shafts and deep caves haven't heard about the third-act alien visitation angle in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but most sentient beings are on to this. I didn't realize until this morning that this MacGuffin element is based on reality, as 12 crystal skulls of an alleged ancient Mayan or Aztec origins actually exist. The unfortunate aspect, according to John Lichfield's 4.19 Independent article, is that they're fakes.

Lucas and Spielberg have RAPED MY CHILDHOOD!

I don't know what world they're living in, but the Indiana Jones films I grew up with adhered to gritty documentary realism! I was planning to see Indy 4 a good dozen times. Now they won't get more than eleven out of me! BASTARDS!

I bought one of these babies the last time I spent a layover in the Denver airport. Just 12 bucks each at Archeological Fakes R Us.

"Spoiler whiner alert"

The translations of that reads "Old Media Pig-headed Prissiness."

I would love if the skulls Indy is looking for ends up being fakes too. All that adventure and death over a nick nack from Spencer gifts.

The Lost Ark is fake, the Shankara Stones are fake, and the Holy Grail? Fake as well. I figure seeing a Space Monkey Skull with magic powers won't shake my enjoyment of an Indiana Jones film.

A whole lot of people in the Judeo-Christian tradition may disagree on the Ark being fake...as for the Holy Grail, that even most Christians would be willing to concede is a pipe dream.

Technically speaking, as a concept the Crystal Skulls in question ARE as 'real' as the Ark and Grail: It's a 'real legend' derrived from spiritual tradition, believed by believers to exist but no physical specimen yet uncovered.

The "fake" Mayan Crystal Skulls were a hoax, but the hook is that they didn't START the legend, it existed in Native/Mezo-American folklore long before, and the hoax was piggybacking off of that.
