Fantasy Moguls' Steve Mason is projecting Iron Man, which I saw earlier this evening, to earn $8 million Thursday night and $103 million over the weekend for an $111 million total. Made of Honor, the counter-programmed, female-angled wedding movie with Patrick Dempsey, is looking at a decent $15 to $18 million.

That's a nice fantasy, but realistically speaking, it's gonna be $40-$60 million tops. Spider-Man 3 was a sequel to a popular film series, while Transformers had that crappy romance sub-plot. All he does is fly around. That didn't work for Superman Returns; why would it do anything for Iron Man?

as a rule, i don't do 'all-media' screenings but for obvious reasons this was an exception.....even i know that one needs to arrive thirty minutes before curtain at an all-media....
no one who was there at six-thirty had to wait in line...it was only after the main theater (10) was full did folk have to wait while another theater (13) was set up to accomodate late-comers.......
that said, i thought the movie lived up to everything good i'd heard about it.......

Grand theft auto IV ensures that Iron Man won't be making THAT kind of money.

This coming from the same person who said Transformers wouldn't earn more than $150 million in the US. And I believe that was said after its opening weekend. You're the last person I'd look to for box office predictions.

dinovelvet: There has been absolutely no evidence presented that the release of a major video game has a negative effect on the boxoffice totals of a major video release. Sure, there have been plenty of articles SPECULATING that it will have an effect, but if you notice, there's no data to back up the speculation.
Halo 3 didn't cause Heartbreak Kid to flop. Heartbreak Kid flopped because it wasn't good and no one wanted to see it. If people who buy GTA IV want to see Iron Man, they can find 3 hours to do so.

I love it. I knew Iron Man was going to be huge once David Poland wrote it was basically a niche film that would top out at 150 -- he said the same about Transformers last year.
My man Poland also predicted that Speed Racer would be the biggest movie of the summer. He has backed off that recently, but only after the Poland curse took effect on Speed Racer's tracking.

I think people have been chomping at the bit to go back to the movies, like they do most every late spring/early summer, and that first tentpole-type movie out of the box in May usually ends up doing very well (top 5 grosser for the year-type box office).
Examples:
5/5/00 Gladiator *
5/4/01 The Mummy Returns *
5/3/02 Spider Man *
5/2/03 X-Men 2 *
5/7/04 Van Helsing
5/19/05 Star Wars III *(although the first big movie out of the gate that year was Kingdom of heaven, with Monster-in-Law the week later)
5/5/06 Mission Impossible III
5/4/07 SpiderMan 3 *
Asterisks indicate films among the top 100 highest grossing of all time, per Yahoo.
Iron Man will do very well.

I think Iron Man will do 300 type domestic box office. $70-75 million opening weekend, low $200 million total domestic. Or maybe it gets up to $230 million domestic. Depends on how good it is.
I just bought my tickets.

jse+Mason: I imagine that the reason we predicted so low is that David and I never imagined people were that stupid for Bay. Plus, he was still licking his wounds from The Island, and I was hoping he was finished for good.
grady: Sure, they can see Iron Man at the same time, but will they actually get off the couch to do so?

D.Z., your bad taste doesn't have a magical effect on the box office. What you "hope" to happen has nothing to do with any of this. Iron Man will easily make 75 to a 100 this weekend. On Monday you'll say, "Oh, well, that's only because of ___________."

I am so sick of comic book movies. They are the end result of a studio system so timid that no one will take big risks on a script that isn't already pre-visualized and guaranteed to appeal to idiot males ages 18-25.
