If I had George Bush's job, I would join Nicholas Sarkozy in threatening not to attend Beijing Olympics' opening ceremony unless China agrees to (a) talk with the Dalai Lama, (b) free political prisoners and (c) put an end to an alleged brainwashing campaign for Tibetans "in an effort to end nearly a month of unrest." Bush is far too mushy and committed to status quo cash flow to take such a stand, but I genuinely respect Sarkozy for standing up. I didn't think he had it in him.

I guess this means that Malone is a Communist. Not many Communists around these parts.
A word of warning, Malone: Communists don't have many friends on these boards, and people who use the word "tripe" have even less friends. And. People. Who. Write. Like. This. Have. Even. Less.

Yeah, I sure hate it when liberal politicians try to force principles like democracy and freedom and goodness are adhered to by the rest of the world through projections of power...

This is what the IOC gets for holding its premier event in a communist dictatorship. Is anyone surprised this is happening?

Dearest George,
1. A few words of warning: Don't care if you're my friend.
2. Tripe is defined as: (1) The rubbery lining of the stomach of cattle or other ruminants, used as food.
Informal; or (2) Something of no value; rubbish.
3. I believe Tripe is responsible for less deaths in the 20th Century than Communism.
4. I was merely trying to say that boycotting will do nothing. Let the Chinese embarrass themselves on International Television.
5. This site is so much more enjoyable when dealing with movies rather than politics.
6. Has any actress in recent memory looked as good as Kate Bosworth did in BLUE CRUSH?

I hope the olympics is beset by protests, and the whole thing falls apart. That would be funny. But if it does, can we still get the cash we need?

Whether Malone's a Communist, Republican, or anything else, his analysis is nonetheless right. The 1980 Boycott was a Foreign Relations disaster, accomplished nothing and certainly didn't affect Soviet Policy in Afghanistan.
As Economically linked as the U.S. is to China, any diplomatic efforts will need to be made slowly and subtly. Boycotts will accomplish nothing. Spielberg's backing out from helping with the Olympics drew only scorn and derision in China, amongst people and government alike.
Reactionary Dipolmacy is actually childish, not intuitive, and that's simply a fact, regardless of whatever political party you belong to.
And I fullheartedly agree that I wish this site kept more to movies... that is just my opinion of course.

No, their Euro's worth more than ours because they're not in an illegal war.
Malone: "Carter's boycott of the Moscow 1980 Games was a smashing success!! Liberal. Boilerplate. Tripe."
Yeah, he should've funded the Taliban like Reagan.
"I believe Tripe is responsible for less deaths in the 20th Century than Communism."
Pro-tip: That's not actually communism which killed them. That's totalitarianism. There's a difference.
Adonis: "As Economically linked as the U.S. is to China, any diplomatic efforts will need to be made slowly and subtly. Boycotts will accomplish nothing."
I'm sure that's what they said about apartheid before it continued for another 14 years...
"Reactionary Dipolmacy is actually childish, not intuitive, and that's simply a fact,"
But it's ok when all the options are "on the table" for Iran.

A distinction without a difference. From one who knows.

Unless you're Ronald Reagan demanding walls be torn down. When Carter stood up to Moscow, that was bad. Yet over 60 countries boycotted the 80 Olympics so not sure how that was a foreign pr disaster. Anyway, we should boycott these childish games.

Yes, how gutsy to threaten a boycott of the opening ceremony, given that it costs nobody absolutely anything to do so. Freedom is well and good, but not if we have to give up our cheap toasters and Happy Meal toys.

Christian,
Look, it's not very important, but your analogy is comparing Apples and Mangoes.
Having an unified Diplomatic Objective, i.e. tear down the wall, stop buying oil from the Sudan, etc., and you go about it in a steady, concerted effort, you have now articulated a Diplomatic Purpose.
That's entirely different from having a basic foreign policy, and then when there's a keynote media/sporting event, you use it for political purpose.
Look, I'm a freaking democrat... The Foreign Policy of the 1980's was short-sided and ridiculous. But Carter's boycotting was foolish. That's still fact.

I have to agree with Malone that Kate Bosworth looked fantastic in Blue Crush -- it's really a shame she didn't keep the surfer body and lost all that weight.
