Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008)
Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves'
Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign,
Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the
Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered:
Cloverfield was a major success.

When I had heard of Sydney's death, this was the first clip I watched. Not only is this a perfect scene in this movie; it might be one of the best I have ever watched in anything. Pollock and Hoffmann play off of each other like two perfectly-tuned instruments. The beats and changes in pitch and intensity are brilliant.

That is the only good clip around of him. I hope someone uploads anything from Husbands and Wives. I love the scene where he drags his bimbo girlfriend out of the party, "come on, you infant!" But I also love the scene where he shows up and intrudes upon Liam Neeson and Judy Davis. I couldn't find any of those clips either. He also has some great line about a blow job.

I think I enjoyed Sydney's work as an actor more than as a director. (that's not a knock on his directing, btw) There never seemed to be the feeling that he was acting. He was that guy. His bit in Eyes Wide Shut was simply chilling.
I know I'll risk five years in the gulag for saying this but I always thought "Tootsie" was wildly over-rated. It's a fun, cute, delightful piece of entertainment, but I always cringe a little when I hear people effuse about how it's "the greatest comedy ever" and so on. I knew the "tomato" clip would be shown over and over.
My favorite is still "Husbands and Wives", (as mentioned above). Pure genius.
"They're trying to have an intelligent conversation and you're jerking off about pyramids and shit!"
